DF - as Paul noted, the 165hp was JIS measurement, not SAE net hp. The 12at engine had comparable horsepower to the 13B in the SE, but had a 12a-ish torque band.

One day I must catch up with someone like MikeLMR and get them to look under my hood to see just what there is under there. In the mean time, does anyone know if the engine pictured below was fitted in any production car anywhere in the world other than Japan? It's a 12A model RE6PI and is in my Savanna 1982 Ltd edition. There's no choke control but a cruise control **** where the choke **** would normally be. I've been checking for ages trying to find the idle set up procedure but nbg to date.

79 is the best to me, but mostly because i own one, lol, but the heart is a 83 12a. I like the style of the interior a little better than 2nd generation, it looks more like a real sports car instead of a mid 80s cross over styling plastic, no offense to 2ng gen owners because what most of them have under the hood is just a little meaner than mine. Yall take care!

Goota love those later GSL interiors: the joystick speaker fade control, the lit-at-night multi-band equalizer, the huge glass sunroof that easily pops out. Kitchy retro cool stuff.
Of course, I had a pair of 12A models, but like the SE better. First, the 13B is always a bonus! I do miss the choke (another kitchy little thing). The SE also handles better due to the greatly upgraded suspension (a precursor to what would appear in the FC). The LSD and larger breaks also rund out the backage... very nice stuff! Finally, the hubs accept more wheel choices that the 114.3 in the GSL.
The drawback to the SE is the additional weight. My -SE has standard steering, another bonus and some weight savings.

Savannah82- the 12A 6PI sold only in Japan was an attempt to get better fuel consumption. It was down on power at 101hp compared with the equivalent 1982 rhd export cars such as the 115hp of the UK model.
According to some tuners the 12A 6PI is very difficult to street port, but I have not heard of anyone trying the Pineapple sleeve used in the13B 6PI to improve performance. Earlier engines had problems with the ports not opening properly which may be one of the reasons the engine was not an export product.
The 82 limited was an attempt to go more luxury, unfortunately heavier, when sales were down in the Japanese market. It came in a special two tone scheme of brown and gold with leather trim and a sunroof. Naturally as a luxury model it got a top of the range music system with 6 speakers, and cruise control. An interesting feature was the rotor shaped alloy wheels as included in the Tamiya plastic model kit mentioned earlier in this thread.

Good Info on the 12A 6PI there Paul.
As cool as the Pineapple racing sleeves are, even they acknowledge that the difference in horsepower over a stock sleeve is a grand total of 1%.

Hi Paul,
Thanks so much for the interesting summary. I've had such great difficulty finding out much about the car with it being strictly for the Jap home market (Savanna Rx-7 LSD Limited Edn).
I'm trying to keep it as original as possible - up to now I haven't found another one still surviving worldwide, though there must be some, somewhere. Mine's as you describe them but in metallic silver. I've noted the plastic Tamiya models with the distinctive fender mirrors, just like mine.
If you know of anyone who has one of these, or if you can point me in the direction of any websites or info on setting up the idling speed I would appreciate this.
Thanks for your help thus far,
Frank
