Beating a dead horse : the 12a to 13b engine swap
Ok i am sure everyone it sired of hearing about this (or being asked about this)
But after long research I am still just as confused as when I started So here are my questions:
I have an '83 GLS and Have obtained a Non-turbo 13b motor/trannhy and ECU/wiring harness from an 86 GS
From my "research" i understand you must swap the front cover to use the existing motor mounts but I must slot them
I also understand that that i must obtain a oil pan from a GL-SE pre '86
1)is that it???
2) how do i slot motormounts?
3) Is there any way to perform the swap without using the front cover of the 12a and without slotting the motormounts? (mazda motorsports bracket??)
4) do i use the alternator and distributor from the 13b? or the 12a?
5) what else will I need? Higher power fuel pump? Exhaust? umm.. a hood?

don't wanna sound short or anything...but i am getting a flood of information and my brain hurts
Thanks you guys are the best

easiest thing to do for the mount is to buy the one from raciing beat. i have a friend that had a torch and bent/slotted/cut one corner off my 12a mount but it would easier to buy it.

I have a 13B ou tof my '85 for sale. It doesnt' run, but I'm not looking to get much out of it, you could use it for the front cover and oil pan....
What do you plan to do as far as ignition? Did you also get the coils from the '86? If you use an FB front cover you'd need a ditsy.

You need the front cover from from a 12a or SE 13b in order to be able to mount the einge to the mounts.
You need the engine mount bar from a GSL-SE, it's shaped in order to reach the engine mounts OR you can go with the modified type and do the slotting or whatever... easier to get the right part than modify the wrong part obviously.
You will need to have an intake mannifold and exhaust mannifold to bolt up to your new 13b because the 12a is a bit shorter thus the exahust and intake ports are spaced differently. I was gonna try to make adapter plates so I can continue to use my existing manifolds mainly cause I'm poor and can't buy new ones
As far as ignition yes I was planning on using the dizzy anyway, I'm not sure about converting to fuel injection though I would like to know about using a CAS for a fuel injected motor.
ANyone wanna fill me in some details of switching over to a Fuel Injection setup? I may have a line on S5 injection and engine... not sure if it's even worth going with S5 stuff over what I've already got?

Go for a TII!
If you're going to all that trouble to convert an FC 13b into an FB, IMHO I would go for a TII--that's exactly what I'm doing. The 87-88 TII with minor intake and exhaust mods will get you in the 200 hp range and still be emissions legal.
I'm going with the RP Turbo downpipe and high flow cat and the RB power pulse muffler. Looks like some minor work to mod the piping from the 2-1/2" cat outlet to the 2" stock connecting pipe. A simple K+N cold air intake/filter on the intake side. Using the stock ECU and injectors with a FCD. Porting the turbo wastegate and hoping to stay below 10 psi boost. At least that's my plan. Will let everyone know how it works out.

2) if you have to ask then you probally have no clue, buy the RB mount
3) yes, with a custom made mount it can be done, and has been done, dunno if mazda motorsports made a bracket or not
4) you can use a 12A dizzy on a 13B, the alt you can use either one its a bolt in
5) if you have to ask this question about the fuel pump then you dont grasp the differences between a carb and EGI (EFI)
and I might add a 6 to this one, if you asking questions like this then you will be truely amazed at the wiring woes you are bout to encounter.
hood has nothing to do with a non turbo

I've never driven in an S5 FC so can some one clue in a bit...
WOuld an S5 EFI setup with a streetport be more desirable than my current setup? (see Sig below)
I may have a line on all the S5 stuff... not sure if it's worth the trouble of doing the swap.

well...... go install it and tell us all about it
I would say, buy a mount.... EF Ilikes high PSI fuel pressure like 95ish PSI, and carbs like like 4-9ish PSI....
So, if your going EFI, get a "inline" (not a tank) high pressure (EFI) fuel pump.
you can go with a second egn alternator also.... more amps...
When I get my car legal, I can come down and help, till then, READ!!!
