Battery Suggestions

lookin' to get a new battery for my Rx, i've always had a electrical gremlin in my GS and the voltage stays fairly low so im looking for something with good crank power.

what kind of batteries are you guys using?

thanks!

well the optima red tops are always a great option. i have a diehard Gold which is a wet cell battery but with 800CCA it's a great battery and fairly cheap from sears. it's also got a 3yr warranty. alot of shops sell interstate, i've never tried one personally.

if i were you and just wanted a solid long lasting battery with good CCA i would go with an optima. be ready to spend like 130 bux though. also if you store it during winter, they don't tire out as much as a wet cell.

If you're going all out, I'd say an Optima.

My Duralast has lasted through more cars than I can think of. It came in my 64 GTO when I bought it and has lasted through that (wrecked), my 300ZX (also wrecked), my 91 Dodge Ram (sold), getting the RX7 in running condition, and now swaps between the 323 and the 7 (I'm too getto to buy a seperate battery).

I'm curious why Optima gets so many votes. I dunno, but I've never had the urge to mount my battery upside down. When the $50 Interstates or Exides last 3-5 years, it seems unlikely that the $130 Optima is going to last 7.8-13 years.

Sounds kind've like the whole Monster cable thing. "Yeah, but our copper wire is OPTIMIZED for audio/video!!!1!!one!". Electrons and holes are electrons and holes, man.

Not just the fact that you can mount it however, I like em because theyre sealed. No fumes means no explosions from sparks, no spilled acid on hard corners or anything from an eventaully leaking cap, easy to put in the storage bins, blah blah blah. That and they have good cranking power and reserve capacity. The discharge/recharge life is good too from what Ive been told. Ive also heard they will in fact last a VERY long time.

What's the diff between the Optima Red and Yellow tops?

I had a DieHard Weather handler (Baseline battery in my 7.) It's been sitting for four years. I pulled the battery the other day and brought it home to charge on a whim. Damn thing had about a quarter of the water it shold've had in it, so I topped it up with filtered water (Tap mounted Pür filter dealie.)

Charged it overnight and brought it down to my truck. Swapped it in and proceeded to crank the **** out of it with the pedal floored (Flood clear mode. Kills injector pulse.) for a good 30 sec. Didn't slow down, the interior light didn't dim much at all.

Tough little ******.

I've also been fond of Interstate batteries.

I need to go steal my dad's Hygrometer to check the spec gravity of the electrolyte.

the yellow top has more CCA's then the red top... The yellow top is more of a car audio battery. The reason I want one of these is you can shut you car off listen to your music as loud as it can go for an hour and still start your car up to go home.

I love the Odyssey in the racecar. Small, light, compact, holds a charge real good too. Doesn't drain as much as others during down time. Was fully charged when I got it, put her on the trickel charger per instructions. Only took 1 minute to charge up to 15V per instructions.

Other new batterys took an hour to get to 15V when new.

The "best" depends on your requirements. Red Top has more starting power, and Yellow Top is deep cycle. If you want more starting power (CCA), Red Top is better. If for example you have a lot of car audio equipment, then Yellow Top is better.

Red Top is 6 lbs lighter

Red Top - 40 lbs, 800 CCA, 120 min reserve capacity
Yellow Top - 46 lbs, 750 CCA, 124 min reserve capacity

There are many variations of each red, yellow and blue, the most powerful/heavy is the Group 31, the one most people buy is the Group 34/78

I suggest using a Exide oribital, just like the g34/78 optima red or yellow but much cheaper.

With any battery you buy, make the sales person test with a multimeter and it should read around 12.6 volts, any lower then 12.0 don't buy it.

never heard of a Exide orbital, but i'll ask at NAPA or lordco. how much do these usually run?

what is the reccomended CCA for RX-7's?

i'll probably go with the Optima yellow, i know i've heard good things about them from the supra folk. however they mostly go with the redtops.

my current battery is goofed, wont hold a charge if the car sits for more than a couple days and even then its below 12v. good thing my car will start up easy as pie with very little voltage on the holley. haha

go to a battery store, & tell them you want a blemished battery, these are good electrically but have cosmetic blemishes, & come with a full warranty, you should be able to get one for twenty or thirty bucks

I have odyssey PC680 in REPU and 7. Light, 14lbs, hold a charge better than none other I've owned. Charges up faster too. When not driven that battery does not discharge as much either. Ebay sells them cheaper than what a reseller can get them for too.
