Bad Bearing? I hope not....

Since installation, my 12A (which was bought used) has a high pitched squeal on occasion. I'm using the RB Holley and have everythen else removed. With no airpump and A/C, I thought that the squeal was coming from the small wrap around the water pump. The squeal mainly happened when the clutch was engaged while upshifting. Now it is sometimes happening while I accellerate to higher RMP's (past 5K). What is wierd is that this happens on occassion. My initial thoughts (from searching first!!!) is that it may be a bearing. Anything I can do to be sure? If it is, what can I do? Is a rebuild my only option? How long will it last until I have to take her out of commission?

I'm building a track car and the cage is on order from Kirk Racing, so a rebuild at this point would be a bummer.

Is your belt nice and tight?

To test for whether the squeal coming from the alt or water pump, with a fully charged battery, remove the belt and take it out for a short high rpm run. Keep any eye on your coolant temps. If the squeal goes away, it's the water pump or alt. Another possibility is an intake gasket leak. The most likely cause is the belt is slipping since the air pump has been removed. A quick test for this is to apply belt dressing and see if the squealing goes away. Permanent solution is installing a dual sheeve alt pulley or the 'yoohoo' belt.

If it is a stationary gear or rotor bearing, the engine will soon die. You will also find shiney bits in the oil when you drain it, or in the oil filter itself if you cut it open.

I just installed the duel sheeve alt pulley the past weekend. The squeel went away for a couple of days, so I thought that was it, but now it is back. I'll try it with the belts off and see.

Update....

I ran the car with and then without the belts installed. Actually, I was scared crapless about overheating so I just revved the motor while in the driveway after cranking it on.

Without the belts --> No Squeal

With the belts -->? Squeal at high RPMs.

I'm assuming that it isn't the main bearing but a bearing in the alternator or the water pump. Am I correct? Do I need to change out the water pump? Anyway to continue to diagnose? Thanks in advance.

Go get some belt dressing, and spray the belts down good. It would be wise to do it without the engine running, or else the fan will make it harder to spray directly on the belts. Be generous and make sure the whole inside of the belt has been sprayed.

Also, make sure that both the belts are tight and one isnt looser than the other, as this could cause a squeel even though one of the belts appears tight.

If that doesnt help, at least slightly Im gonna have to say the alternator or the water pump is on the way out. A mechanics stethescope might be able to pinpoint the location the sound is coming from, but my money is on the belts.
Its definately a common problem, one Ive faught with many single belt setups, and even the double belt setup that I ran last.

I used the belt dressing and it helped a good bit. I feel much better now that the main problem is the belts, however I'm frustrated that I had just bought two belts for the car, same brand, same time, installed the same and now the outside one looks like it's more loose than the inside one. I now get a slight squeel at times.. mostly when letting off the gas. That has to be the problem, but now I have another battle....

I wish I knew about the Yoohoo belt from pineapple racing before buying the RB duel pulley for the alternator.

Now, do I just have to try belts until I get the right combo to work??? Or, with the Yoohoo belt help the most?
