is this bad?
i always have to turn the key half way then pump the gas twice b4 my 1985 rx7 starts.
i only started doing this recently when i the weather got colder and also i think i flooded it..
i thought i fixed it before by doing that technique
(1. turn key to on but not start to get the fuel pump going
2. pull choke out
3. pedal to the floor 2 times
4. start )
but since then i always had to do it..
then i again i only got the car so i dont know the real history of it..
tell me guys if theres any real long term damage if i keep doing this to my beautfiul first gen..
oh and im glad the forum is back up
thanx for the help guys

I have no choke at all on bridgeport's weber 50dco. I pump it like 10 times and it starts right up and then dies no matter how much you try to keep it going. I usually have to do this 3times when its below 25F. I don't have any problem getting going on 50F+ days with 3-4pumps and then starts.
Today it didn't even get above 25F! You gotta love Minnesota. At least the snow isn't on the ground yet and tomorrow is Dec 1st.

correct me if I'm wrong here, but wasnt it only the SE's that would turn on the fuel pump when you turned the key to on?
I'm 99.99999% sure because of the EGI system on the SE's... and turning the key on my 85GS to on, never did anything to the fuel pump.

Nope, my '82 and '83 GSL's turn on their fuel pumps with the key in the 'ON' position. The '82 is still stock. The '83 has an aftermarket fuel pump though the wiring should still be the same.

no, i think S1 and S2 cars run the fuel pump while the key is on while S3 cars only run it when the engine is running.
rx7carl: what would you suggest i do to fix it? richen the mixture? Its gotta be something carb related cause most of the ignition is new: plugs, wires, rotor, and the timing is dead on.

To adjust the mixture, use a vacuum gauge. Adjust the screw for max vacuum, then lower idle speed, rinse lather repeat.
Also trans am your dashpot may be bad or mis-adjusted. When It drops off fast idle/choke, the dashpot should allow for a nice easy rpm drop. If yours is defective, then the big rpm drop will kill the engine, then you start it up and it will run fine (sound familiar?)

Well, if its mildly cold, like high 30'sF to low 40'sF then yes its dies then starts right up and idles fine. But in colder weather like freezing and below it dies, starts right up, dies, and continues like that for a good 5 mins of driving (coincidently right in traffic in my drive every morning, really annoying) then its fine afterwards.
How much does a vaccum gauge cost?

my 85 GS took three pumps with the choke when it was cold. Now with the Mikuni on there it takes 5. The pedal makes the accelerator pump squirt a little gas into the carb and gives you a head start with a rich mixture.

damn now its hot and i still have to pump twice..
