The air pump belt should never be disconnected when the thermal reactor is used. Part of the air from the air pump is used to cool the inner chamber of the thermal reactor, preventing excessive heat from migrating back into the motor after shutdown, possibly damaging the apex seal springs if an apex seal happens to "park" itself in the exhaust port window.
