backfire

hey i've got a 79' rx7, street ported, about 5,000 miles on new engine, new paint job... looks good, but the thing throws flames like mad, i've heard if you put on a header, and eliminate the thermal reactor, and air pump, then it will backfire like that. but it still has the thermal reactor and air pump as well as all the stock emissions control. on deceleration from higher rpm's it will backfire, (sounds like a gun) and throw some pretty impressive flames, please help!

You have a leak somewhere along the exhaust at the thermal reactor or at the pre-heater bulb downstream allowing fresh air to ignite the exhaust coming out of the engine which is rich by design for the SA's.

This happened on a previous SA I owned, it'd shoot two blue 2' long flames on high-RPM shifts.

I liked it.

Pics?

Actually it is the other way around. Get rid of the thermal reactor and install a racing beat system with the headrer and presilencer. The backfiring is probably coming from an air leak in the reactor. Common on the older cars. Other than that, search the forum for "backfire". You can read for days.

did the SA's have an anti afterburner on them? or is that just the FB's but it sound like you are running really rich and you have a hole in you exhaust system. but that just my $.02
