automatic 1st gear whistle

Ok well i noticed a while ago that when i dropped the gears down to one, it made a noise like a whistle. and in second it makes the same noise only not as loud, none of the others have it. so the question is basicly, is that normal? i mean does anybodys stock 84 do that, if not then i guess its bad. j/w

Mine does this too, haven't ever figured it out as to what it is. Kinda sounds like a turbo spooling. I just grew to like it.

A lot of automatics make some noise in 1st.
The lower the gear, the more meshing there is going on in the tranny,to produce the lower ratio.Plus, automatics inherently have a lot of gear mesh due to the nature of the planetary gears.Once you hit 3rd-4th gear, there is little or no reduction inside the tranny, and the gears dont turn and mesh with each other much,so things tend to get quieter.

This doesnt mean your trans is automatically OK.But if the fluid is clean and red and doesnt smell burnt, and the trans doesnt slip or pop out of gear, when you take off, then you are probably fine.

Just do a transmission fluid change if you want to play on the safe side.

I actually wouldn't recommend a fluid change, unless you know for a fact that it had been changed within the last 50K miles. A lot of times the only thing keeping these autos working is the stuff that new fluid would clean off. Just keep a good eye on your fluids, make sure they are at the right level and, IF they start to smell burnt, then change it. Just my 2c.

I second that practice, and have firsthand experience with our rental trucks.
Ive had several older, well beaten trucks, puke their trannies out immediately after an auto-trans service.I make a note to use high milage tranny fluid which has less solvents and detergents, but even that doesnt always help.Neglected trannies will usually turn their fresh fluid black in short order, and a failed clutch band is usually not far behind.
