I've been told the same thing but I don't believe it. The factory shop manual certainly doesn't say that you have to remove the engine, only that you need a tool to remove the flywheel nut and a puller for the flywheel or auto trans balance weight. Racing beat sells replacements for all of the factory tools.
I'd still like to know why people suggest that removing the engine is a requirement.

well removing the engine isint hard to do at all... i would prefer to remove the engine... it maked thing WAAAAY easier to work on....
my first engine pull ever was done on a GSL-se BY MYSELF with only 1 person there to half assidly get me the toold i needed... i did it in under 2 hours..
im not worried about having to pull the engine causing a shitlad of more work.. it may be a little more work.. but it will make the process less painfull...
ive been told the pedal assembly is the hardest part of the swap... so im not quivering over pulling the engine and tranny

Well I've pulled and installed engines (okay, one of each) on a first gen too and it wasn't too much fun without access to a real engine hoist and stand. If you've got one, great, I guess, but it'd be much easier for me just to put the car up on stands. How are you planning to get the flywheel locking nut and the auto balance off?

Here's what I used to pull it, 2'' thick steel. I tried just using 1'' thick at first, but it just bent the sh*t out of the puller.

estimate cost
I know this is a very general question, but how much would I expect to pay to swap my auto to manual? I have an '85 1st Gen. (Seperate the parts, and the labor cost.) Just a ballpark figure is fine.

i will be finishing the swap monday and im sure it will drag over to tuesday... i got the pedals and clutch master in...
im woorying about having enough leverage to get the flexplate off and torque the flywheel down with just dropping the tranny (ive decided on not pulling the engine)
when i get the flexplate off... will it just slide off? or will it need to be pried off?
