AZ Arizona Emssions

Alright, so I found a clean 82 that's already been modified somewhat. The OMP and air pump were removed and has a full RB exhaust with presilencers, muffler, and no cat. I've read mixing the gas with ethanol would lower the HC, but would that effect the way the premix would mix in with the gas? I also saw someone who said the hooked up a scuba tank with pure oxygen up to a bung in the exhaust... crazy idea but in theory it sounds like it could work. If I really have to I'll find myself an air pump and install it just to pass. In Arizona we do the dyno sniff e-test. Any help is appreciated!

i'm not sure what your emissions limits are, but with no air pump and no cat the HC's will be on the order of 2000ppm.

adding the air pump and carefully tuning the carb will get you into the 300's.

adding the cat will get it under 100.

Well, emissions testing in Maricopa County may be different than your home county, but recognize that AZDOT requires a combination of the equipment check (looking for various air filters and pumps, pressurization of the fuel tank and charcoal recovery system, and a gas cap that seals properly), along with the driving 'dyno' test which checks the emissions at specific power intervals.

My 84SE always passes with flying colors as long as the factory exhaust manifold and cats are in place. The Air Pump has always been on - even with the RB exhaust - as it serves a function on deceleration and to move cooling fresh air into the exhaust. That said, it will NOT pass with just the RB exhaust; I tried.

If you're unable to find a factory exhaust setup including air pump, you could consider going for Historic Vehicle plates which will get you out of the emissions test, but also limit the car to being driven less than 5,000 miles in a year. This is typically reserved for classic cars, but any car more than 30 years old will qualify. This does away with the need for both the visual inspection and the exhaust dyno test.

Give it some thought and do a quick search in Tucson to see if anybody has a factory exhaust setup they can loan you. Where I am, they require the full test every 2 years if you pay for 2 years of registration; so, every other year, I get to swap in my factory exhaust system for the test, then put the RB system back in for 2 more years...

There's no emission exemption for cars over 25 years old or over a certain age in AZ? Here in Ohio, the exemption for emissions testing starts when a vehicle is 25 years old.

Man am I glad that we don't have to deal with the emissions garbage up here in the frozen north.

I may have a few air pumps for FB's sitting around if you're in dire need of one.

I haven't been able to find a straight answer on this one, but it does appear that testing is not required on historic or antique vehicles (25 years and older.) There are special plates for these vehicles, but I cannot determine if that is all you need to skip the testing. It sounds like they may still do an inspection for original equipment. I cannot find a requirement for historic or antique vehicle insurance, but I have seen that as a restriction in other states. I am in Maricopa county and was going to call the DMV, but the 85 GSL-SE that I bought only has 75K miles on it and had just passed emissions. I would like to know if anything is determined in case I happen upon another first gen in a lesser condition that I cannot pass up.

I think I'd want to know what was actually required. Wouldn't want any nasty surprises from officer friendly in case I was pulled over. I'd contact the DVM. Normally, historic or antique plate just have a mileage condition or only for parades / special events.

I'd think like any other vehicle, the law requires insurance but does not stipulate what kind. I'm sure a regular type of policy can be had fairly cheap, just be warned, unless you opt for an agreed value type policy, if you ever have an accident and you are carrying Comp, the insurance company will most likely total your car, even if it fairly minor.

Here in NC, once the car is over 35 years old, no inspections, nada. Every state is different. I would call
the DMV yourself and find out the details for your area. Even within states it differs for example in Kali
I know it depends on where you live.

Here in Maricopa county..you need to have collectors insurance on the car, then take that to the dmv and you can register it without needing an emissions check. The catch is on the insurance, each insurance company will have restrictions on the car: ie annual mileage, must be garage kept, must have a daily thats xx years newer, may need to have the car appraised. each insurance company will have different limitations. i have an agreed value with am-fam. i have other cars for daily and the arraisel cost me about $100 i pay about $25 a month for it. i know of others around Phoenix that use different insurance company and have different restrictions.
