appropriate idle speed?
my 85 GSL idles at about 1000rpm... that seems kind of high. is that what everyone else is getting? do you think this is severely affecting my gas mileage?

i can't get mine to go under 1100. :-/ it was at around 900 when i was running it way too rich, but now i have it running not too lean or rich, and it's at 1100. dont you just adjust the idle at the linkage facing the drivers side of the carb? or is it the one in front of the carb near the main pulley with the srping in it?

A wll tuned 12A will idle at 700 rpm. The offical specs are 750rpm plus or minus 25.
!000rpm is high but should not necessarily increase fuel consumption significantly. Ported engines are a different matter, I have seen a bridgeport not liking below 2000rpm.

As you change the idle speed screw, you usually end up changing the fuel mixture screw.
it's a dance that should end up at 750, but usually ends up between 800-1100. If you're uncomfortable with it, reset them (making sure to write down how many turns out you were) and start from scratch - it's a game that goes on for hours that the whole family can enjoy!

The Haynes manual says not to mess with the mixture screw on newer models. Plus, at least on mine, the mixture screw has a metal cover over it that I haven't bothered to remove yet. Mazda should trust us more. We know what we're doing.

Mine will idle at 1500 when I come to a light, and then I have to put my toe under the pedal and pull up to drop it to 750... Any ideas what could be causing this?
