They are about twice as wide as most cars today and use thicker sheetmetal.
Most of the structural damage, to both mine and Manntis' cars was in the rear fender area, with some moderate damage to the a-pillars/roof area aound the winshield...

My wife and I were in a near head on collision in my 82 with a 70's 4 door impalla. He came around the corner at a red light wide and I was stuck where we were. At the last second he veered a little hitting the driver fender and lifting the car while sliding down the whole drivers side. Most small cars would have been a write off. There was $3000.00 damage (this was 1990 so they fixed it)but no major damage. If we were in a FIERO or CRX I think we would have been more seriously hurt. As it was my wifes back was messed up for a year. I still could pull a rockford and chase him, he got away running stop signs and lights. RCMP found him a year later. I have a lot of respect for the first gen. I was rear ended by a SCIROCCO and he had major front end damage.
If your really worried though find a 70's 4 door, the car had a scratch and a little black paint on the big *** chrome bumper thats it!!

I hope no one ever has to test the car more than we have already heard on this forum.
