Anyone watch mytbusters on TDC?

Well, I was just watching an episode of it, and I think I just saw a big *** truck slamming into a poor defensless first gen . I didn't really get a good look at it, but I'm pretty sure it was, i glanced over when i heard "Head on Collision" and there it was, getting obbliterated by this beast of a truck.

Kind of sad isnt it?

If anyone else saw it, and knows it was one, i really want to watch this episode, I want to see what happens to one when it gets bashed by a massive truck, it could be educational for us all!

I thought it was a Toyota Corrola? Like the AE86 body style? I didn't really pay attention...

Whatever, though. There are more.

It could have been, i don't know, I just barely caught it, but it sure looked like a first gen. I think it would be kind of interesting to really see what would happen, i know the car isn't the most safe one around, but I want to just see how bad it would be, if it isnt, i say someone buys an old one that doesnt run or anything, and lets bash it with a big truck or drop it off something, that would be sweet, destruction is always fun, even if it is a first gen.

Well, both Mantis and I have been in serious collisions with our FB's and walked away.

Both our cars went off the road and rolled.

Someone else (possibly FDRacer) had a major head on collision as well...

I have nothing but the utmost respect for the safety and durability of the 1st gen RX-7...

I was present at Spencer's crash, and I will never forget the images posted of Manntis' crash... and it's given me an amazing respect for the quality construction of these cars.

I feel safer in my car than I do in many of today's cars (two sunfires and an Echo being the main ones I drive other than mine).

As for mazda spotting, keep a good solid eye out on the highway in the second matrix movie IIRC.

The Italian Job has two (one FB and one FC) in the traffic jam if you watch closely

Its actually a pretty safe car in crashes for a couple of reasons:

1 The front end has a lot of crush room. Just look at all the space forward from the engine, thats like a foot and half of metal that can absorb the energy from a front impact.

2. The bumbers really work well. I rearended someone with my SA one time and I had no damage other than the headlights were up at the time and they got slightly bent inward and that was easily fixed. The other car (1987 GrandAm) lost its entire rear bumber and I think crumpled some sheet metal around the trunk.

3. In a rollover the B pillars are pretty stout, they help keep you from getting crushed pretty good.

4. Those heavy doors are heavy for a reason, they can take a beating before they give way.

I had my brother in law who does body work for a living tell me that he was amazed at how well the car is put together under the skin and he thought it was one of the safer cars he's seen just based on the infrastructure ( unibody) that its built on.

If you go to the junk yard you see SA and FB that have been in some pretty bad accidents. Sometimes there is still dried blood and stuff on the interior. Look closely at every one and you see that hardly any of them have had the interior violated by the crush from the crash. Then look around at some other cars from that age and see how well they have done. Its an eye opener.

Yeah, Jon and bunch of the other forum guys (and Sophia) were just saints!
They took good care of us (Me and my wife)

Jon actually has a couple good pics I think (you can post them if you like)

BTW, in the Italian Job, if you look really hard, it's at least 2 FB's and one FC (possibly 2 FC's)...

Sunfire is the worst car there is when it comes to a side impact. Chances of living thru an accident in one of those starts getting slim above 25-30 MPH. A 35 MPH side impact can be deadly to whoever is sitting on that side.

Wow, I really never would have guessed that, I pretty much just figured if I got smacked, i was doomed. I still feel more safe in my car than new cars, just because it is real metal, and not 1/8" sheet metal, but still. My friend go side-swiped at 50mph by a drunk driver, almost killed him and the friend with him, and he drove a grand prix, a big old one, so thats why I have been curious as to how my car would stand up, his little ordeal made me think about it a little bit more than usual.

But, i'm actually glad to know our cars are a little bit more safe than I originally thought.

But, I still want to find out if that was a 1st gen on mythbusters, like I said, i barely caught it, i will see if I can find some priviews online or something so it can be confirmed/debunked.

I don't know about any of you, but in my own humble oppinion, after putting so much time into my vehicles (as I usually work on improving everything, even on newer cars) I would rather be in a coama than see my baby all battered to hell.

I saw that last night. The car is a Fiat X1/9 (body by bertone) the car was made in the late 70' and up til i think 1985. It was rear engine and had a removable steel hardtop.

Well, guys like Manntis and I are in a unique position, and I know we agree...

I miss my car like hell, and it hurt me a LOT more to look at her than any physical injuries I sustained...

Next to my wife and daughter, there is NOTHING in this world more important to me than Elanor (my car's name, don't flame please)...

But she died... and she did it saving my wife and I...

So I paid my repects to her, and even tho it really hurt, I'm moving on.

I have a new build planned fo the sping..
And if I were in a coma I wouldn't be able to build or drive my new car so....

If you're REALLY curious, I have pics I can e-mail, but I won't post them publicly out of respect. My car, Manntis' car, and the other car (I think it was FDRacer)...

e-mail me if you're interested

I've seen Manntis' car 1st hand, and for a car that rolled, the damage isn't really THAT bad. The car is totalled, no doubt, but the roof didn't collapse inward more than an inch or so. The A pillars buckled some, but not much, and the B pillars didn't even move.

Aside from the tight quarters in side impacts, the 1st gen seems to be fairly good at protecting its driver/passenger in a crash. Now my CRX, on the other hand, that I feel vunerable in.

It doesn't really surprise me much how the roof holds up on these cars in a rollover. I've seen pics of both manntis' car and smnc's car. Both rollover victims and there wasn't any kind of damage done in the B pillar area. I have some "quality time" I spend working on interior parts in that area and those B pillars are VERY beefy. They are about twice as wide as most cars today and use thicker sheetmetal.
