Any RotorHeads in Minnesota?

Just wondering since I been thinking of moving there sometime next year. Let me know what part of Minnesota you are from.

There's a few of us. Does 4 RX-7's in 6 months qualify me as a rotorhead? I know of a few first gen guys up here. A guy named Eric, screen-name: ( 82streetracer ) has an FB with a 400 hp T2 swap. I've currently got an 85 gsl-se, an 84 gs, and an 81 gsl. There's a few others on this board also. It's not like we've got a lot of 7's up here, but there's still a few. Personally, I'm into autox, so I'm currently setting up my gsl-se for CSP. We've got a really good autox club up here. They've got a website, www.mnautox.com . All in all it's a cool club. I live about 40 miles NW of Minneapolis. There's also a club up here called Northstar Rotaries. I haven't really checked them out, but they've got a website too.

Don't move here unless you like salt on your car. So don't drive your RX-7 during the winter here if you care about rust or keeping your car from aging badly. 1st gens seem to be the most prone to rust unfortunately. Also, find a low cost winter activity like snowboarding or skiing because winter is so very bitter cold for months otherwise you'll find yourself not liking this place as much. Summer- guess what are "other" state bird is.

Yeah, you wanna have a clunker for winter use. You can break out your Good Car on the occasional pleasant day in the winter. Many Minnesotans find it necessary to spend entire weekends in bed with the GF, occasionally schlepping to the kitchen for food or beer.

But when summer comes it's the greatest! Aaahhh, summer evenings driving around the lakes in the warm air with your GF or gawking at the beauties jogging around. It has it's compensations. Get a date, rent a canoe at Lake Calhoun, paddle around Calhoun, Cedar, lake of The Isles, etc., with a GF and a picnic. Play golf at Francis A. Gross, a private course converted to public use. And then there's hunting and fishing.

But if you do accidentally have some fun, don't let anyone know. Complain about the 5 months of winter, the -30 January, the sudden snowstorm in May, the mosquitoes, etc. that's the way they keep the riff-raff out.

Thanks for the info guys I am looking forward to all of this. It will be maybe later summer of next year. However is nice to know there rotoheads out there.

Hey inuissus_cendi, Personaly I am not sure where I will end up. It all depends on jobs and the rental market of apartments or homes. Personaly my fiance have family there and we have places to stay. Even a huge farm if anything out in Welch but most likely will end up somewhere near the city for jobs.

Hey bliffle, your right about that, I know about the cold, salt etc.. from there. I lived in NYC for a while and it gets sometimes very cold and bad snow storm weather but I know that you guys get it badly there. I am planing once I am there to get a 4x4 just for work. My fiance have a 2000 Tiburon SE that dose very good on snow. My Rx7 is my daily driver and who knows it might have rust somewhere I am not sure but my guess is it might. Having it as a daily driver here in Washington State with this long rain can give this car rust as well.

Hey WackyRotary, I spend a week or two there in Welch and man I love it. I know winters will be cold and lots of snow but that is ok. I spend it most of the time Working out in the gym, working with music, video editing, comptuer etc... So, I should be find staying inside at home with my fiance.

Hey Beep777 and ot81to, thanks for the link I will check them out.

Sounds EXACTLY like how I spend my winters, you'll do just fine. But yeah, don't spread the word about Minnesota summers, we like to keep it our little secret.

I think you could actually run your 7 in the winter, if you take certain precautions. Like: powerspray the underchassis every week while the car is in the air. Drill drain holes underneath in strategic places. Some people undercoat cars, but some say it just traps salty water against the steel. I ran my 59 sprite for 3 winters without problems just by going to the drive-thru wash once a month.

Real Minnesotans scoff at 4x4s as the effete affectations of Californians. Any driver worth a damn can learn how to drive a car successfully in snow. At most you might need snow tires or throw a bag of sand in the back, but if you've got LSD you're way ahead.

My sophomore year of high school, I drove a lowered '82 chev S-10 p/u with a SB Chevy V8 in the winter. Junior year, I had a 2wd S-10 Blazer. It's always interesting when you're waiting to pull out of the parking lot onto the highway, but can't go because the slight incline just keeps you spinning. All the while, you've got 15 buses behind you, waiting to pull out of the parking lot. Kinda embarassing. MN winters can be interesting, but a lot of fun too.

Yeah, my first 1st gen I had I used the first winter I owned it, big mistake-! RUSTED unbelievablely!!! LOTS of it in NO TIME! Better off, just taking it off the road and having a secondary car for winter. As for driving it in the winter- LSD is so fun, handling is awesome once you know how to drift through snow with it. IF you can't get out of a particular spot due to a ton of snow and no traction, lower your rear tire pressures so the tires have a noticable bow'd out- but not flat! This can be done with ANY car with the drive wheels-don't do it to the tires that that are not drive wheels though. You will gain the traction you need to get out. Just remember to add air before you go over 30mph though! Don't spin your tires too much with low pressure- the tread will come off quickly. I always kept a small air-compresser in the car for that trick- it works great.

But driving winters, its just too hard on the body, so I would recommend not doing it.
