air pump belt
hey i was wondering if the air pump belt is necessary or even what the air pump really does?
i heard it's just for emissions.
my alt. belt broke and it screwed up my air pump belt in the process, it's all twisted and stuff, so i was wondering if it was necessary or if i should just cut it off for now.
thanks.

The air pump is a smog control device.
You can remove it,but there are other concerns when doing so.
The catylitic convertors will melt down and/or plug up if the smog pump is not working. This could leave you stranded or worse burn your car to the ground.
If you choose to remove the smog pump, its best to go all the way and remove all the smog equipment related to the secondary air injection system.
This includes the smog pump,
The ACV(box on the side of the intake manifold that the pump feeds air into)
The pipes and hoses to and from the ACV
Gut and replace the cats,or install a straight pipe or headers
Install blockoff plates for the ACV hole, to prevent huge vacuum leaks
Its recommended to run a second fanbelt alongside the alternator belt to prevent waterpump/fan slippage when the smog pump belt is removed.
FWIW,the smog pump doesnt really draw much HP or hurt anything being there. And the exhaust will really stink when the smog gear is removed. On the other hand, you might pick up 1-2 HP,youll have a cleaner engine bay and youll shave a few pounds.

I'm from Vancouver as well and I was questioning having to purchase a smog pump from the original owner of the vehicle who took it off...perhaps to hold it hostage for more money. I took it to get airtested and it didn't pass! Luckily I know that when I got my actual aircare test, I won't be going home with a fail...I hope..

umm, if the air pump was removed but the cats were in place, you may not be able to expect the cats to function properly again with the air pump installed.
our cats were solid carbon when we got our rx, because the air pump line rusted off. the cats would glow cherry red in broad daylight after a boot, and the car was slow as ****.
after we gutted them she turned into a rotary death missle, but theres no hope in hell of passing emissions.
what some guys do is install a highflow with an air inhjection port, and use the air pump all the time (bypass the BOV for the AP) to clean up their emissions to the point they pass.
