Air Cleaner question/help

Looking for some help on this hole(see video) as only way my car idles smoothly is with the hole plugged so wondering if someone could tell me what it is/does and if there is something missing or wrong somewhere else...?

Also either I am going very blind or this car has no cold start assist.. did cars from the US not come with it?

Its and 83 LE btw..

take off the cannister...there should be a hose that runs right in the carb/intake manifold...can't remember it has been so long...plug it or run it your call...

Okay smart ***...you want a better explaination...here you go...that little hole you plugged has to due with your coasting valve...that check valve thats bronze or gold in color is your idle compensator...Some where in that mess of hoses and **** you have a leak...Follow that hose and it will lead you to a check valve...if that is messed up replace it...if it isn't it then check all your vacumes, valves, one way check valves so on and so forth...There's your input...

There is nothing smart assed about my comment. I asked a question you gave an answer and I said thanks and as that I was looking for something with a bit more detail I asked for more.

Now I have that too and from and you yet again. So now because of that I have a little more direction of where to go/look.

Once again I thank you for your input! Was a great deal more helpful this second time around.

Yep that's the shutter valve opening. It's completely useless. Sounds like your's has gone bad so it's just causing problems. Just keep it plugged or remove the shutter valve all together. Just for some info the shutter valve was designed for something like 3 1/2% better fuel economy under engine decceleration

yeah you could just plug it...probably best...
