age of engine?

Is there any want to tell if the engine in a car (1st gen) has been replaced? I mean you can tell if its been replaced before sometimes becuase things have been modified, but is there any way to tell when the engine was manufactured?

I know my t2 engine came with a tag on the front cover with the rebuild date. Is there any stampings or markings that are different from year to year? The car is a 79, it has all the things that came with the 79 on it (reactor, emissions etc) but the engine itself looks too shiny (rotor housings) to be that old.

Anyone have any idea how to check?

Yeah thats a good question, I know on the motors I have here, theres a number stamped into the top of the front housing , its right behind the front engine hanger.. Its really really hard to see and read unless its shined up real good... Maybe the serial number of the block. Are these numbers suppose to match to the cars VIN? The few motors I have put in that were rebuilt by mazda, have a R on top of the first rotor housing, assuming it was a rebuild.

You can tell the early engines easily by looking at the area around the spark plug holes. If there is a lip abouve them then it is a later engine if there is no lip then you have an early engine. Also I do not believe that the early emission sysltem will hook up properly to the later engine as there is a couple of small exaust ports below the main exsaust ports on the older engines that supply the reactor (which the later engines did no t have).
