Advice- 12A not started for a long time
I am looking at an '81 GSL, w/115,000 miles.
It has been sitting for 5 years with only the ocational start and drive around the block. Is that hard on the motor?
I have hear that turning the motor over with ATF or ??something mystery oil can help this?
Thanks

How often were those start-ups and drive around the blocks? If they were any farther apart than once every 6 months there is a definite possibility of oil seals drying up. If you start the car up and it smokes like crazy, let it warm up good, and if it doesn't stop smoking after 10 or so miutes (at the most) it's got problems. Take the car for a thorough drive, and if it doesn't stop smoking after a good 10-15 minute drive at 3500+ rpm, problems.

What you're talking about is the infamous ATF treatment.
You have two choices in fluids, Automatic transmission fluid or something called Marvel's Mystery Oil. Do a search for ATF or MMO or ATF treatment using the search function on this fourm. I've typed it up numerous times and don't feel like retyping it. I might cut n paste it later.
It's used if the engine hasnt been started for a while or has been babied and looses compression. What happens is some seals in the engine are spring loaded to push against the housings and provide good compression. Over time they get stuck or carbon binds them. The ATF or MMO frees them.
