AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH steering box, HELP!!

I need to remove the steering box for painting my engine bay and I cannot get it off the steering column shaft..

how does it come off..

It doesn't come off I don't think. I've always pulled the whole unit.

so you have to remove the steering shaft out through the engine bay..... that doesnt sound right.

it does seperate about a 1/2 inch but then it stops.

wont budge any further.

anyone know about this...

No Never Got The Shaft To Come Off So It Doesnt Really Matter, Its The 1979 One That I Am Not Keeping Anyhow

The shaft and box are one piece, until they are not.

Remove the 3 bolts that hold the box to the frame rail.
Remove the bolts that support the black housing under the dash.
Pull the entire unit out the front of the car and down.
The car will need to be on jack stands for enough room.

The black outer housing slides onto a sleeve on the box itself. The black outer housing will slide off the inner shaft.
Only way to get the inner shaft out is to remove the large nut on the top of the box and pull the worm gear nut with it.

Look at the installation of one of our member's RE Speed Rack and Pinion Kit, he explains the disassembly very well.
