OH 85 RX-7 - New to the Forum

Hi, my name is Jennifer and I just purchased my second RX7 (my 1st was in high school). We just ordered an repair manual but have a few questions. My son-in law is a Ford mechanic and he is very interested in learning about the rotary engine. It had very bad acceleration and he cannot figure where the problem is coming from.

Can someone give me some help?

Welcome to the forum, Jennifer.

Can you give more info about the car? Was i stored for a long time before you got it? Is the gas old? The more info, the better.

things to look at (assuming gas is good and such)

- replace fuel filter. They are only about $3-$4 and only take a couple minutes to replace
- leading spark may not be firing. The leading plugs are the bottom ones. The rotor housing will have an 'L' next to the plugs.
- catalytic converter could be clogged
- carb may need rebuild

All of this stuff is much like a piston engine, so your son-in-law should be able to help out.

Everything that Kent said is great advice. The fuel filter is the very first thing I'd check. After that I'd get some new NGK spark plugs to put in it, and see where you stand. My next guess after that would be that the carburetor probably needs rebuilt. With cars this old, I've found that it's really a matter of replacing stuff until you fix the problem. There are so many old used parts that often times they will all fail in conjunction, leaving you scratching your head. When in doubt its better just to replace it.

If you ever get stuck and need a hand with anything on the car let me know. I'm about an hour away from you in Richmond, IN. I'd be more than happy to meet you somewhere for diagnosis, and or advice, or just to check out the car!

Good luck,
Jamie

Red face 85 Mazda RX7

Thanks guys for the advice. We will try a new fuel fliter. My car has been sitting for about 2 months. The guy ran out of money and time so he had to sell. The gas tank was empty we had to put gas into just to get it to a gas station. It needs a new radiator, mine is shot. I ordered that yesterday from Auto Zone.

I will let you know how this works out. What my son in law cannot figure out is the wires, we do now have a manual so that has helped a lot.

Jaime - That would be great if you could answer or come see the car. There are very few people around here that know anything about these.

I am sooo excited! Thanks again!
