It's a body shop, the guy bought it at auction. He will smog and register it since he is a dealer. The car is not advertised yet, I know a friend of his and he hooked me up.
The paint is peeling on the drivers side fender, the passenger rear tail light clear cover is cracked, and a peice of molding on the drivers side rear needs to be stuck on better. Other than that it is cosmetically really nice. The thing I liked is how smooth the engine is, it sounded like it was in really good shape, sure reved slow compared to my lightweight flywheel streetported FD though.
The diff looked greasy and some of the suspension joints did also, should I worry about that?

Old Rx7's, even though never modified, won't pass emissions.
Through normal wear and tear, the thermal reactor and catalytic converters break down and need to be replaced. The cost of replacing these items are almost the Blue Book value of the car!
People used to do illegal emissions testing, but now they can't, they have some realtime link with Sacramento or something.

Well the sale is contingant upon him smogging it for me so I wouldn't have to worry about it for now. I got my streetported FD to pass with the help of a few gallons of denatured alcohol

WOW, according to the actual emission test reports (both 2001 and 2002), both the HC and CO dropped to ZERO! While the CO2 % dropped just slightly below the OEM cat/therm react system. Hope this helps you emission test RX7 owners. Of course, these tests are only done at idle, so other states may get different results.
peace, Bryan.

Why is it so rare to find high mileage GSL-SE Rx7s on the original engine cotrasted to all the 12a high mileage RX7 out there still on the original engine (like mine)? Is this version of the 13B a high mileproblem? And why didn't Mazda ever put fuel injection on the 12a?

I have a stupid question (I am a RX7 owner nubee)- why does my 85 GS have the adjustable lumbar support on the driver's seat, but I don't see the dial on this GSL-SE- is it a different type of lumbar support adjustment?

The body and interior looks good. The price is great. Still though you will want to know what kind of condition all the major systems are in to know what type of expenses you are headed for. Everything will eventually be replaced. I feel GSL SEs are high mileage engines (13b). I sold one in '96 at 160,000 mi. in great shape and I bought one last year at 150,000 with a very strong original engine. Get a compression test at the dealer or an RX-7 shop. I would still buy the car though even after all of this. These cars are easy and cheap to maintain (with the exception of the expensive gas and emissions parts). Think how much these ricers spend on their Hondah engines. Just learn the cars mechanical status of all major systems. I did the same strategy play-find a good interior, body, engine SE and fix what wears out over time.
