85 gsl-se just dies HELP

ok the car really runs very good , if i'm sitting at a light and i dont keep reving the car it just dies ,, it will stay running for anywhere between 3 to 7 secs then it just feels like some one just turns off the key, but it starts right up

i havent had a tune up in a wile just oil changes, the car runs good as long as i keep the RPMs over 2000 when i'm sitting at a light, but if i'm driving its fine , then again if the RPMs are very low when i'm driving it still dies. i'm starting to think leading ignitor (spelling sorry) and coil cause if just dies like some one turns the key off no sputtering or if i try to save it. it still just dies

thanks for any help ,., JON ,,,, jon95210@yahoo.com

Jon. There are too many things to go over with you on the Se's inherent idle issue. Recommend that you start some searching. Start with the FAQ section then the Archives.
While you are doing that I need some info from you. Need to know the history of the car. How long have you had it? When did it start having this problem? What if anything have you done to the engine recently?
The more info that I get the easier it is to understand what may be happening.

Thunkrd,

I adopt old, poor bedraggled cars, especially rotarys. All my vehicles were orphaned.

I'll volunteer to come save your old decrepit SE from the crusher. Just have the title signed and ready for me. No charge for taking it away. I'm in nearby Los Altos.

It may be due for one but it is not what his problem is.

Some of the basic things to check on the Se are. Vacuum leaks. Make sure that the hose that comes off of the air intake to the t/body is sealed well. Also make sure that where the two halves of the air intake hose connect that it is not loose. I don't thing it is either one but lets be safe.

Check to make sure that the vacuum hose is attached to the bottom of the IACV on the side of the plenum. Also make sure the electrical connector is attached to the valve.
Inspect the ACV that is located on the side of the intake manifold facing the passenger fender. Make sure the gasket is good where it bolts the valve to the intake. Inspect the various vacuum hoses that attach to the intake manifold. That means the ones on the passenger side, facing the front of the car on the plenum and the back of the plenum facing the firewall.
These are all basic things that need to be eliminated.
When you have read up on all the other things that can cause this problem then you can procede with further testing.
There is also the possibility of bad injectors. I have seen some that would take rpm but not idle because of improper flow or spray pattern but the chances of that are low.

In my sig line is a link to the online FSMs. Download the 85 edition and start reading. Follow the diagnostic flow charts. When you get stuck, lost or don't know what's what, post back. Doc's the resident guru on the SE's and will steer you in the right direction.

Is the tach moving when you crank the engine?

Your trailing ignitor died. This is also part of the circuit that supplies power to the fuel pump.

Then you have an ignition problem. Tach (and fuel pump) run from the trailing ignition so your trailing ignitor or maybe coil is busticated.

Uh, yeah. Shoulda refreshed this before I posted. I meant, +1
