I just turned 16 about a month ago, and I'm looking to buy a 1985 RX7 GSL off of my boss. My mom doesn't think its a very good idea because it will have to be titled on her name. She thinks if something happens, we can get sued big time. But, I was thinking, how is this different from borrowing my parents car? Wouldn't there be the same consequences if something happened while I was driving their car?

I just need some help trying to convince them to let me buy the car, because I really want an RX7 and I've been waiting for months for the oppurtunity.

so your parents own it and you are on your parents insurance policy right? I am no lawyer, but it sounds fine to me. call your insurance agent and see what they say.

there is going to be a price difference in insurance when you have your own car. but other than that, i believe that the liability/consequences are the same in both situations.

I'm turning 18 this Friday, and I'm getting my 83 GSL transferend into my name from my Dads the Monday after. The reason for waiting is because you cant have a car in your name until you are 18 (in Washington anyway), so if you are wondering if its ok for you to drive it while its in your parents name the answer is yes. How else would you do it if you had to be 18 to have it in your name? As far as insurance goes, try calling your familys agent, because some companys offer a multi-car discount , so try using that leverage if you can . Also, putting it on your parents insurance is a normal thing as far as I know...Lots of people do it to save some extra money.

PS - Yes, if the car was in their name, and you wrecked it, it would be the same as if you were borrowing their car, assuming you are listed as a driver on their policy. Also, this is all just to the best of my knowledge, and based on what I know and have heard here in Washington.

I'm 21 and have been doing this since I was 17 with both my cars. You get listed as the 'primary driver' for your car. Your parents' rates only go up as a result of you being on the policy though - if you do something dumb and raise your rates skyhigh, you could stop driving and their rates will go back to normal. From what I've seen, rates depend on the risk factor for each individual driver on the policy.

**** im wondering why the hell even get insurance. My dad got hit by some dude in a old truck w/o insurance. The dude w/o insurance got a ticket, went to court and got fined. My dad never got **** outta it. I mean drive around with no inusrance get busted, go to court pay a $300 fine, dunno bout you but failure to maintain liabilty insurance seems to be another way to say insurance discount. I mean personally I wouldnt do it.. But this dude didnt own a damn thing of his own, and my dad and many other people get screwed and the guilty party walks a way... Sorry for the rant, and I know its not even releveant to what we are talking about...

In KY I had a car in my name when I was 16, but who knows laws vary from state to state Best thing to do it call your local DMV and ask

Yeah, do it that way while you still can. With my provider, once you are 18, you have to be on your own policy if you have the car registered in your name. That means higher payments!!! Yahoo......no
