Is it a GSL-SE? Or did someone drop one in? If it's stock, you have a small chance that the intake is leaking and allowing a water O ring to leak into the intake.
But, if it's in the oil, probably a rebuild will be needed. Sorry.

If it's white smoke it's usually coolant being burned in the combustion process. This could be a result of bad water o rings and water jackets. If it's that bad it sounds like you need a rebuild. Is the car overheating at all?

If the smoke is only condensation from the cold weather, it will dissipate quickly. If a water seal is gone, the smoke is much heavier and hangs in a cloud for a number of seconds. Very white. And it will smell sweet, not like gas.
Overheating is not a great indicator of bad seals; they have to be leaking very badly for that to happen. You would have other signs before it got that far along.
One easy way to check for a bad water seal is to remove the radiator cap (obviously, with a cold engine) and start the car. Wait until the thermostat opens and check for bubbles in the rad. If the water seals are bad, you will see a constant stream of bubbles, more as you increase the rpm. If the seals are particularly bad, the water will flow out of the radiator. That is the compressed gas getting past the seal and pressurizing the cooling system.
If there are no bubbles, I wouldn't worry too much about a bad engine. Change the oil and keep an eye on it. The milky look of the oil may just be from a lack of oil changes and/or a non-functioning purge valve. Not ideal, but not necessarily a bad engine either. To check the purge valve :
And by the way, -SE's do not have o-rings in the intake, so that is not an option.

Do seek a second opinion. I don't know what symptoms you've had, but the search function should help narrow it down.

It doesn't sound good...but look in the radiator for bubbles...

FJ: its not just based on what you've said, its been doing it for a while and I have done some searching and it seems like thats the problem, the fact that the coolant level is slowly going down confirms it too. argh, just what i need, aren't these things supposed to last longer than 104k?

Mine certainly did, though it was a 12A. Do make sure that it isn't something else, as a well-cared for motor should not be going at 104k miles. I guess the real question is: do you know the history of the car? How did the previous owner treat it? (assuming you're not the original owner) The buy before you might have overheated the engine or whatnot.

82transam: Sorry to hear it. It just sounded like you might have been jumping the gun a bit...
You're quite right. Thanks for pointing it out; I could have been more descriptive.
Allow me to expand: the coolant will spurt, gush and flow out heavily, if the seal is cracked badly enough.
Think Mini Mount St. Helens.

Not necessarily true. As the temp rises coolant will naturally start to flow out of the radiator with the cap off.
