84 GSLSE What aftermarket speakers do you have in the front stock location

I have read most of the info here on what fits in the front stock location. I know the 4 inch speakers fit obviously, but I want to do 5 1/4 in the front.

I just need to know exactly which 5 1/4 speakers fit so I can get an idea how deep the speakers can go without taking things apart right now. I'll do the install in the spring. I don't mind redrilling or cutting to fit. But they have to fit flush on the drivers side for obvious reasons.

I saw one guy had MB Quart reference but not sure which model. I could only find depth measurements for the 6 1/2 speakers there.

I did go to Crutchfield and the speakers they say fit are the 4 inch Focals. Two models, neither of which are over 2 inches in depth. lol. I don't want to put out that much money.
If you know for a fact the depth speakers I can use, I would sure apreciate that info. Thanks

i use infinity 4" reference series speakers and i like the way they sound and the fact that they fit in the stock location with zero modification makes them much sweeter.

I have an SA so it may not be the same. I grabbed the 4" cheapies at wally mart.
They were cheap but about 10 times better than the original ones in there just
looking at the specs. Fit perfect under the cardboard footwell cover and sound
very good.

You don't need to get ubber fancy speakers to improve on 30 year old speaker
technology.

I think that a standard 4 1/2" is what is supposed to fit, but different manufacturers make them a bit different. Finding one that fits the hole cutout will be what you need to do - so you get the largest cone, and best seal.
Speakers are sold with information on the cutout diameter and mounting depth - so pull the speakers out, make some measurements and head to the store to see what you want to get.

With a spacer I got some profile 5 1/4" speakers to fit in the front, but they weren't easy to mount in there. I needed the larger size to handle wattage since I had a fully amplified system in the car.

Yes, I have an amp. I bought the JL XD400/4. It's probably overkill but that's what I wanted beacause of the very small size and good power. I probably need speakers that are in the 50-75 watt range. I was looking to get the Infinity Kappa components(5 1/4) in the front and the coaxls in the rear(6 1/2) in the rear. I also have an Eclipse touch screen to plug in to.
It's a bit much in this car but the cost of everything is around $550. I got the Eclipse dirt cheap and the amp for under $200.

I just thought someone would know the depth in the front. I could spend more and get a good speaker with a shallow depth but they are pricey and I'm not sure how they would sound.
I would like to do a 4 inch but not sure they would work with the amp. And the sound would be better with the 5 1/4.

The problem is not the size of the opening it is the depth. I just did my system in my SE and I had to door pods for the separates. 5 1/4 would be perfect but that hole in the kick panel is WAAAAY SHALLOW...you wont be able to fit it inside. You would have to build out and if you do you may have to remove the dead pedal on the DS. Pass does not matter as much.

IMO the fronts are the most important. I am using orion 6.5" separates in the front, rear are mid level pioneer 2 ways for fill and the DS pod was removed and I have a 8" sub inside and the PS pod is intact and the amp is tucked inside.

here is the pass door

This a Pioneer double din with Nav which fits perfectly....

Thanks for the info and the great pics. I do like your door pods but I can't give up the pockets.

I may have to spring for shallow speakers. idk I'll come back when I get it done.

I have been thinking about the Eclipse touchscreen. I think I may leave the stock stereo in, add an LC6 line convertor so I can do the amp and speakers. Sell the Eclipse and hide a cd player/changer in one of the bins. All I really want is to have a great sounding stereo to play cds on. This will keep the car looking fully stock. I still have to pick speakers once I know the depth in front. Anybody know exactly how much room I have?

i have a question bout those door pods. u make or buy them? and if u made them, r they thick enough to eliminate cutting a hole in the door panel?
