'84 GSL-SE Rear Wiper Motor Problem

My project car is coming along well. Next problem is restoring the function of the rear window wiper. The OEM motor mounted to the glass appears to be mostly frozen up. When you switch it on, the wiper runs slower than an Integra in the 1/4!
Actually, what happens is that the wiper begins to track up with apparent difficulty and then stops. My question is: Is there a rebuild that others have done on their's that I can do here, or are we looking at replacement? I live in Rochester, NY where the need for clearing the windows is acute. If replacement is needed, any suggestions as to where to get one would be acted on immediately.
BTW, whoever suggested that the rear gas shocks could be easily replaced with a visit to Advance Auto for the purchase of Strong Arm replacement shocks is my hero. I did just that and they work beautifully. Thanks to that poster if they are reading this.

hey grady, if you can find a replacement for not bad price go for it. I had a problem with mine on my 83 it was bogging out and only worked half the time. So i pulled the case off the glass and took the whole mechanisim and motor apart and cleaned it right up. Now it works good and doesn't bog out or go slow or draw a rediculous amount of current. Make sure you put some 3 in 1 electric motor oil on the motor shafts, clean the brushes, commutator, and armature. The gears are probably whats giving you the grief though so I would clean that out and lube it up with some good grease and then try it out before taking the motor apart. Another thing. make sure you replace the rubber gromets that go againster and between the glass and motor housing or try and seal them up somehow so water doesnt seep in and get into the box again. Thats what frigged mine up.
Have fun.

Sounds like a good play. Since I have witnessed the wiper arm moving, I have to assume that there is still a mechanical connection, so a good old clean up and relube might just do the trick. At this point, doing nothing will accomplish just that anyway, so I'll give it a go. Another poster suggested just replacing the motor, which sounds good too, but I'm going to go down swinging! Replacement will be my fall back position.
Did you get replacement grommets somewhere like a home center or did you just cobble something together? Is it still watertight?

About the gromets, The rubber washer type one on the outside was the one that was wore out bad, so all i did for that was find some thin rubber laying around and cut out a circle with some siccors and cut out a hole for the bolt hole. The rubbers on the inside were still alright but i did put a bit of clear sealant on the side facing the window, as well as some sealant on both sides of the rubber washer that was made. Its been good so far. Best thing is, you don't even see the rubber you make, or the sealant you put on so i think its a good quick and cheap fix. Good luck man.

As luck would have it, a replacement motor and arm assembly showed up on E-Bay. I just won it, so that will save some time. I will use your suggestion though for sealant and a rubber gasket. Thanks again for the help.
