CA '82's got issues?

So a few things I want to run by you guy's to see what you think?

1. My brake lights don't work, checked switch and fuses, what next?
2. Loud "CLUNK" when shifting into Reverse from Park while on the choke?
3. RPM at 4k at 65? Is it normal? (Automatic)
4. Your thoughts about driving on the choke? (after waiting 10-15 mins)

Thanks guys!

For number 2, I'd check the u-joints. The FSM says the u-joints are not serviceable, but they can be replaced. First gens have what are called "staked" u-joints. I took mine to a good drive shaft place and and they can be replaced with an after markets u-joint made to replace the staked ones. There is a write up somewhere on here. Cost about $120.

1. if the brake light switch at the pedal checks out good and fuse is good, check the bulbs. outside of that, idk.

2. choke or not, probably universal joint.

3. idk since i've never owned an auto.

4. after 10-15 min the choke should have released provided it's working correctly. otherwise push it back in. should be warm enough after that long a time. driving with choke on only hurts gas mileage.

Ok, it sucks in a few minutes into me driving, but sometimes I am in a rush and don't want to wait for it to warm up

for no1 i suggest looking up a wiring diagram find where the wires run and getting yourself a continuity tester and find if u have a break in ur wire.. Also did u check if both bulbs r burnt out. highly doubt it but ur gonna be angry if u do all this work and it ends up being some bad bulbs.

when u have the choke on ir just makes the Air Fuel mixture richer. If u need it on till its completely warmed up then ide drive with it till its warmed up.

Alright, I'll go ahead and try the bulbs, but there are 4 so it'd be awfully coincidental all 4 are out just the brake lights :P Then again maybe the previous owner put the wrong bulbs in

Is that what you're talking about? Also how soon does this need to be done?

1. try the bulbs, next step would be to start checking for power
2. could be the u joints, in 82 the u joints are still replaceable. also while you're under the car, the transmission mount should be looked at.
3. yep! no overdrive until 1984
4. yes, start car, pull choke, let it run for 10-30seconds and start driving, just drive gently until its warm

Yep, that's how it's done. Waiting only stresses other parts of the drivetrain and you don't want to wait until the joint fails completely and separates from the driveshaft, very dangerous.
