Hmmm, $1700 is a bit step IMO. He's the origanal owner so I'm sure he's trying to sell his feelings for the car as well. Me being me I would offer $1000 at the very most, the car does have over 200k miles on it after all.

Alloy wheels? working air conditioning? Interior is great shape? Need a paint job huh? Personally, I would rather have a properly cared for and well documented high mileage car than a much cheaper car that might need everything. I have my seven and a parts car (good engine), and I saw an add in the trader for a 85 RX7 AND a parts car for $600. Hmmm. Give me strength.
But on topic- it is YOUR money. I would check and see what its actual value is, so you won't pay more for it than say somebody's insurance would pay you if the car was totalled the day after you buy it. No matter what new parts a car has, it is still only worth what it is worth.

If the car is the one you want drives good and you said new motor if its just a play car there is nothing on that car you cant repair and one owner shows how the car was taking car of it for along time would not be afriad of it at all make an offer 1300 or so would be fair to me also when smog laws drop that year off the books you can do anything to it good luck Gil

Make a lower offer, but the car is worth it. Next year the 79 will be 25 years old and that's when they start to appreciate.Especially since the 79 is the debut car. And this one is original.
Don't let the 200k mileage worry you if the car has been well-cared for. It's a bonus that it has a 24k motor. Other stuff that goes with age is easy to fix. The sloppy steering is a $6 bushing, or a complete link for $130. I'm amazed at the longevity of these cars, having owned a number of lesser cars that I bought new and watched crumble in less than 100k.
If the brown color is original, let it be. A new finish in the same color will make it lovable.
How's the interior?

No, brown is not so bad. There are of course better colors (my car is black, i think that's the best). I got my car for $2200, nothing wrong with it, (85 gsl-se) no paint fade or anything... so...
good luck. i'd say go for it. hopefully not too much over $2000.

yeah he's right, 200,000 IS ALOT of miles. But if you can talk him down low enough it might be worth it if you eventually get a rebuild or new enjine....but thats a whole 'nother thing..

If truly no rust ANYWHERE, I believe I'd jump on that puppy, offer about 1200 to start, though.
It would be so cool to have a 79 and keep it in great shape for 10 years or so and watch it become more rare and valuable.

lets think 200000 miles / 24 years = 8333 miles a year if hes the oridg owner and no damage no rust jump on it but inspect it real good first. miles are not high by any means more like low for a car this age.

I'd say jump. If there is indeed no rust in the wheel wells, then do it. The '79 is harder to check for rust because they lack the storage bins, but so long as she seems straight and rust free, $1700 is not too steep. Especially considering there's a new motor in there. Offer him $1500, but I'd be willing to part with the whole $1700.
Good condition S1 cars are hard to come by, so grab her while you can.
Good luck

to check for wheel well rust you have to remove the whole metal subframe under the carpet, and that requires an impact screwdriver normally, 'cause the screws tend to seize in. I'd say if the guy will let you, take off a wheel and check it out from outside. If there's nothing noticeable, they'll normally be fine inside, maybe just a bit of surface rust.

great comments guys!!. I appreciate it....some asked about the interior and paint...interior seats re-don ...and nicely I might add. the put a cloth seating area instead of vinyl ( I think vinyl was original)..the dash is cracked (I forgot to mention that) but it has that dash cover thingy that goes over it ( they got it from victoria british).. the console is faded but I have no problem with that at all as I can re-dye that..I have done it before and it came out great... no rust as I said,,,no dents, no collision damage...needs paint...faded for sure...it may need new tires soon,,,has michelins on them ...two tires are real good, the other two are passable...new clutch...brakes good....hummmm what else.........guess that is about it...any other comments?? suggestions??? I plan on meeting with the owner this week to make offer.... thanks.......cjf
