79 RX-7 a few questions here.

I just recently picked this RX-7 up from a gentleman who recently advertised this car here. It has 65,000 actual miles and even has a Mazda Engine that was installed at about 38-45000 miles. The car has been sitting since 1993. Obviously I brought four tires with me, towed it back home. Started playing with it and cranked it on after about 30 minutes of fooling with it. I had to run new fuel through a gas can.

Everything works on this car to include the clutch slave cylinder. The clock in the instrument cluster works, the A/C compressor turns on even thought there is no freon, radio and the long *** power antenna works. Idles perfect.

I drain the stagnated full tank of gas, cleaned it, put it back on the road, even rides like it has low mileage. Drove excellent for a day, next day when I took it for inspection on a 10 mile trip, it cut off on me four times. I pulled to the side of the road, looked around, fuel was still getting to the carb, cranked it five minutes later and it started right up. It did it three more times the same thing.

I am wondering this:

I put electronic ignition plugs while it still has the points system, is this affecting it????

One coil (trailing) had oil, I replaced it with a poinys type coil. Maybe it was that??

I have a little crud in my fuel filter that I see, maybe it is still remnants from the gas tank cutting off the car????

It felt to me more like current. I also replaced the wires.

The inspection failed because I didn't have back pressure from the exhaust. I feel heat but no pressure coming out of the muffler. Is it clogged??? Still has the thermo crap and "monlithic converter", it is not glowing. If it is clogged will this cause the car to cut off????

I am looking for a header right now, I am planning on the electronic dizzy swap, I am just wondering what some of you gurus think.

Here are some pics http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/perezj.../ph//my_photos

Sorry for the post.

It doesn't have a converter on it, just a heat exchanger and thermal reactor. Changing the exhaust can't hurt, so I would do that. I would change out the fuel filter ASAP. The trailing coil won't make much of a difference, you can run the car without the trailing ignition all together and it doesn't make a huge difference.
Also, I would put the newer type electronic distributor on it, or at least replace and set the points.

I had an ignition switch go bad in my 79 once. I would be driving and the car would just turn off. Engine would die, all lights etc would go off. I would restart it and dirve a bit and then it would shut down again. Replaced the ingnition switch and problem solved. With the car running try moving the key around a little. If it dies without actuall turning the key your switch is gone.

Definately would replace that fuel filter and I definately thing that mixing points and electronic ignition components is not good. Switch it to all electronic igintion as soon as possible. Best thing I ever did for my 79.

that's a pretty nice car. needs some work, then again what RX doesn't? I noticed something, I don't know enough about SA's to call it fact, but didn't SA's only come with "waffle" wheels? yours seems to have "plus" wheels... those only come stock on 81-85 rx7s correct? (excluding LE's and SE's)...?

Lots of good suggestions, but I was wondering, does it feel like the coils might be overheating? You said the car was still getting gas to the carb, so I figured it must be ignition related. Maybe try swapping the coils around and see what that does.

Oh yeah, there are a few dizzys on Ebay right now for good prices (saw them this morning). I would pick up a 2nd gen leading coil pack while I was at it too.

Guys, thanks for the input.

I have about 5 or 6 electronic dizzys around the garage. 2nd gen trick I will do or pull the other MSD6A from the other yellow car since you don't really need two of them.

Touge FB - As far as the wheels, you are correct, they do come with waffle type wheels. This car was the "S" cheap model. This car came with the steel wheels like the older RX3s and RX2s. It has the 4 speed tranny instead of 5 and no cassette, just AM/FM. I put the 81-85 style because, those wheels that I had stored are in very nice shape and have brand new Firestone tires on it.

Seats are from a 1985 GS, the others were torn in the fabric part. I plan to do some more mods, but not too much because I will take the reliability out of it. That was the mistake I did with my first yellow RX-7. What a big mistake was that.
