79 no spark, no start

Ok, my friend has a stock 1979 rx-7, with the old ignition (breaker points). he complained to me that it sputtered & missed a bit up high in the rpms, under full power. So, i pulled off the cap & rotor, and we took 320 grit abrasive paper, and cleaned the carbon off between the points, on the tips of the rotor, and on the contacts in the inside of the cap. Put everything back together, and it will not spark. pulled a plug, and it did not spark when i watched it while the plug was grounded. 12V power gets to the coils, but with no coil wire attached to the coil, there is no spark jumping to the ground of the coil. He needs the car fixed asap, since it's his daily driver. I don't know how removing the cap & rotor, cleaning the contacts, & putting them back on, would mess up the coils? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Did you make sure that you reset the gap properly on the points?

Your best bet would be to find an electronic dizzy, 2 12 v coils, 2 j109 ignitors and switch the ignition system over to electronic. There is a write up in the FAQs. It will save bucks in the long run and provide better perfomance and minimal maintinance.

Found the problem, and rx7doctor, that is the problem. I turned the motor over by hand untill the cam on the dizzy shaft opened both points at the same time. one of them was open half that of what the other was open. and there was a bridge in it that hadnt been sanded. (my buddies fault, lol no jk). well i hit it w/ a file, & it ran, but still stutters on launches. so tonight when my dad gets home to help me (dont want to mess anything up... again) im'a gap the points correctly. i've got a hanyes manual, so hopefully its in there. thanks though.
