what is an easy and reliable way to tell if the 5th and 6th ports are opening

I would guess have someone rev it to about 4200 and watch to see if the actuators are opening. I just took a wire tire and straped mine open since I have no converter and the air tube is gone.

Doesn't the engine have to be under a certain amount of load before the ports will open?

i did the air pump mod.. used some excess tube and a one-way valve from ace hardware, haven't got to drive it on the street yet, but it looks to be a sure thing..
