4 Rotor Engine?

I was wondering, why haven't they made an engine with 4 or more rotors? That would put out quite a bit of horsepower. Or is there a reason why they can't? Just wonderin'.

they've made and raced a 4 rotor (767B or something) kicks lots and lots of ***!

and theyve made a 6 rotor.. but aparently they cant run it because its too hard to get timing and stuff right without it blowing up

there are quite a few 4 rotor projects around the world now .... a quick search would bring up thousands of threads along the lines of this one

Umm.. they have made a 4 rotor. The Le Mans winning 787B flaunted a naturally aspirated R26B four rotor engine with a nifty self adjusting intake (which I believe many people wanted banned). If I'm not mistaken, without the variable intake a rotary is helpless because of its non-existent torque. But at any rate the 787B did have a 4 rotor.

Now if you are talking about putting that in a street car or someone doing it as a personal project, I've heard of a few in progress but have never actually seen pics of anything yet... It would be very cool indeed.

Just head on over to Jim Downings place in Atlanta. He has MANY 4-rotors just hanging out on the floor and mounted in cars. They are just sitting there unused. I believe all or some of them are peripherial port. Neat.

Mazda mad e the 787B LeMans car with the R26B engine in it. The car, as well as all rotary engines, were banned because it kicked so much ***. Then there's SCOOT motorsports in japan who made a 4 rotor out of 12A parts and put it in an FD. It's by far the sexiest thing ever. One of my goals in life is to see the SCOOT four rotor. Probably won't happen. It just costs sooooo much to build. I don't think anybody on here is going to be making one any time soon. I'd love to see somebody try though. I have a vid or two of the SCOOT four rotor if anybody wants to host them.

Was reading not to long ago about someone who put two 13b's together to make a 4 rotor motor.

You can't just "put 2 together". What about the eccentric shaft? It's gotta be custom made. You also need another bearing or two to support the center of the shaft, one that long will flex a shitload without it.

Exactly. And then there's the cooling problem. Some custom stuff has to be made and it costs an *** load.

I think that is what they thought that I was refering to. Just a bolt on. Anyone with sense would know that would not be the case.

Didn't realize someone was actually looking for one to use as a daily driver.

If I'm not mistaken, without the variable intake a rotary is helpless because of its non-existent torque
Mazdas 1991 LeMans 4 rotor R26B with the telescopic intake put down about 450 ft/lbs of torque, thats almost as much as a JUDD V-10 without restrictor plates.
The 1990 13J 4rotor with fixed intakes put down around 390 ft/lbs. Thats more than the Ferrari 333SPs mere 330 ft/lbs.... hardly non-existant nor helpless were Mazdas 4 rotor engines in the torque department

If the R26B only put out 450 lb/ft then it's kinda sad. It put out 700hp didn't it? A bit of a seperation there. A piston car's torque wouldn't be that far from the hp.

That car was taken apart and rebuilt with a V-8. I don't want to speculate on what happened to the engine.

And what is up with this torque/hp crap! An engine needs to spin to make HP, the faster you can spin it, the further hp moves away from tq. A big diesel spins slow, makes lots of torque, and not much HP. A race engine spins fast, makes lots of torque, and more HP. If an engine redlines around 5-6 grand, the tq and HP will be close.

GRRRR.
