1) The second gen diff has a LONG pinion. It is about 7" longer than the first gen. The length of the miata is the same as the first gen. This would make you think that the stock first gen drive shaft would work *but* mazda changed the mounting plate on the diff to match the second gen on later miatas.
2) A miata torsen (SP?) style diff can be had easy. Thought to be superior than the clutch style.
3) The ring and pinion on a miata is the same as the first gen. If you happen to have some laying around at least they could still be used. 2nd gen went up in diam. by one inch and then the turbo was one more inch as well.
When I get home I will post a link I have for Miata and Rx7 part interchange. It could help you decide.

My project would see 250HP. I did go see a buddy @ mazmart here in Atlanta (Paul) about the parts. They have sold many for supercharged applications. You could speak to him and get his opinion. Here is the mazmart web address. http://www.mazmart.com/
This web site has a good deal of info and links to other sites as well.
This is the link to the drive train specific page.

Again, My project will only see 250HP. I will only weigh in at 1300 pounds also. My biggest reason for choosing Miata bits is the 7 inches shorter pinion gets my motor that much further back in the chassis and the miata spindle/hub combination has control arm links that are centerline to the axle. Neither of these two things would matter much in a production car shell that uses the compete IRS system. I just thought I would shoot you the info anyways.
