So welcome aboard, check out the FAQ's as they are really quite informative.
FWIW doing a 2nd gen IRS swap is way to complicated and not worth the effort. the semi trailing design of the 2nd gen was a mistake on mazda's part and it in a lot of ways is worse than the suspension in the first gen.
look up 3rd link, and panhard rod. I am currently researching these myself as posssibilities for my project car. for me it depends upon there legality for street use where I live. for you this might not be a problem. a couple of threads down is a discussion by nicos for swapping the 2nd gen suspension, and I thing after reading it you will probably come to the same conclusion.
also no need to swap gas tanks.... if you want a powerful intank fuel pump do search on my name... iposted some photos of how to make one for the 1st gen.

Uhhg!.....this is turning into the new question of the day.
No,its not impossible to do....but youd better be VERY mechancially inclined and a good fabricator and welder.Basically,if you have to skills to do it RIGHT,you would not have asked the question in the 1st place......bare truth.
Kenn_Chan is right, its not a great IRS to begin with, the stock 1st gen live axle can be made to work very well, with little investment.
The 2nd gen gas tank has its filler on the wrong side, and its basically a completely different shape than the 1st gen.Its not very hard to modify a 1st gen tank to accept a 2nd gen pump assembely.Again, you have to be creative, and be a good/safe welder.
