2nd Gen coil pak resistor yes/no?

People:

Have connected my J109's to a 2nd gen coil without using the resistor just to test it. No problems as of yet but the write-ups on this all seem to warn of dire consequences if I don't hookup that pesky resistor.

Searched the archives as well as the FAQ's and no one seems to give a definitive answer to this question.

I'll tell you one thing; this setup absolutely ROCKS!!! The increase in power was fantastic, with increases all across the board but especially noticeable on the bottom and top ends. Throttle response was noticebly quicker and I wish I had a 10,000rpm tach because the mother now rips through 8000 without slowing with a sound like the end of the world! YeeeeeHaaaaa!! I didn't realize that streetport 12A's were so sensitive to ignition; or is the stock setup just that much of a POS?!

Seriously I would like to know if anybody has run this setup for long periods of time without problem? Or is it just a matter of time before the leading J109 detonates? Not that critical anyway; I was just testing this with a 2nd gen coil I had lying around as a baseline for my TIFFY-DIS system. Details to come...

Sanspistons; feeling better about the money spent on this motor.....!

I've never made use of the resistor and never had an issue. In fact, I had forgotten all about the warnings that it was needed. lol.

And yes, I've been saying for a long time that there are crap loads of power to be found through ignition mods but nobody seems to believe me!

Which ignitor are you guys using without the resistor?

Talking about use with a J-109. I just remove the coil pack from the ignitor half so I don't have to tear anything up.

(Of course, none of this applies if you are using the transistor trick)

Thanks for the advise; sorry it takes so long for me to reply, I'm not able to get on the net very often these days.

Kentetsu: brother, you aint kidding!!!! We need to start a FAQ or archive a sticky about the power to be had in 1st gen ignition upgrades!!! Simply unbelievable how much better my mistress runs now. Spread the word that anybody still running a 1st gen w/stock ignition is wasting (almost) free power. Tell them to run DLIDFIS or 2nd gen or whatever; the stock ignition might as well be a make-and-break in comparison.

Still working on TIFFY-DIS, my first attempt a resounding failure but have found the pin-out problem. Just lack time to breadboard it together. Intend to try the Transistor Trick also if time/money/ambition doesn't run out first...

Sanspistons for longer, stronger sparks...

LOL. If you like the standard 2nd gen mod, then you'd really like the transistor trick! There is as much of an improvement when going from 2nd gen to TT as there is from stock to 2nd gen. Unfortunately, the current model burns out the 2nd gen ignitor after varying lengths of time, which is a pain in the ****. I still use mine, but after it burns up I usually wait until just before a race before replacing the blown unit and just use the standard 2nd gen mod in between. Again, a pain in the butt except that it is totally worth the effort just to have those gains again. Good luck with your project.
