2nd gear woes

grr. I've missed 2nd gear like ... 5 times now. If it was 3rd I'd understand, as the tranny can shift and whatnot, but 2nd is just right down. It only seems to happen if I'm shifting past 7k tho.... grrr. and it's not all the time either...

Synchros?

get a short shifter. When I got mine it mad the shifts a lot more precise. Maybe that will fix it.

Interesting, I'll look into that, thanks for the thought
For now I'll go with the easy fix, shifting out of 1st at or below 7krpm

have you tried changing the tranny fluid? Redline MTL took care a scratchy 2nd gear and reverse shift in one of my previous Rx7's

I drained the previous fluid and added castrol syntec gear oil and didn't notice a difference. Maybe I'll look into some redline, but, I'll also look at just not shifting out of 1st to 2nd above 7k.. 1st goes by so fast anyways

I had a terrible time with 3rd - not the torque brace fix/trouble finding third - but actual grinding going into 3rd gear at high rpms as well as slow/clunky shifting into other gears. I swapped my tranny fluid to GM Syncromesh transmision fluid and the next day I was out slamming through the gears up in the mountains with absolutely no grind at all. I use to cringe at the thought of downshifting into third but now it just glides right in. Got the idea from a buddy who has a 3rd gen. If you look at some of the performance transmission setups on the web alot require that you use GM Synchromesh in their trannies.

Hrm, it's no-longer produced.

Is redline tranny fluid like gear oil, like 80w90 or is it more like motor oil?

I got the 3'rd gear grind blues, too. Will not grind only when RPM's are low. I've had red-line in it for two months. No difference so far.
Where can I get that GM stuff??
Hate to spend $$ for even a used tranny!

2nd gear is starting to get worse for me, and the guy from GM said it's not produced anymore - the fluid that is.

And do you just add Synchromesh or do you fill the tranny with the stuff?

Syncromesh can be had at any GM dealer. Got some a few weeks ago.

Okay, but do you fill the tranny with 2.5 qts of it, or just add some?

you could always just have a tranny rebuilt. then put redline in that one...

That would solve the problem i think.
