2GDFIS Question

2GDFIS Question
I scored a 2nd gen leading ignitor and coil pack while I was at the salvage yard today. Now I can get serious about the 2GDFIS upgrade. Is there a way to test 2nd gen ignitor and coils before I start the upgrade? I would like to confirm these are good before I start. Actually, I am not going to be using the ignitor right now, but I would like to check it out any way.

Thanks for the suggestions. But, I may be too old to try either technique. I have too much forehead to stick my finger in the coil socket, and I've been married too long to start peeing on spark plugs. lol
Anyone have any serious advice on how to bench test a 2nd gen leading ignitor and coil pack?

The one who could answer that for sure would be gslseaddict. He and jeff20b wrote the book on this stuff. You can find the exact spelling of either userid in the "transistor trick" thread in this section and send him a PM.
If you find out how, please post it as I scored a 2nd gen coil and ignitor and want to check them myself.

You have a couple options. First, if you do the regular 2GCDFIS, you only need the coil itself. You can test it by measuring the resistance between the + and - terminals. The terminals are located under a plastic cover that says "L1 L2" on it. The resistance should be less than 1 Ohm.
The other option is the 2GCDFIS w/TT aka "Transistor Trick". This setup uses the ignitor and the coil together. The best way to test as a pair is to:
- ground the base of the ignitor pack
- connect 12v to tan wire
The signal wire is the red one. Usually this is a 5v pulse used to fire the ignitor. For testing, it wouldn't hurt to tap it against 12v. When you tap against 12v, the coil should fire. You should have the plug wires attached with spark plugs in the end. Ground the base of the plugs. This will help to make sure you don't end up like Matt's testing procedure.![Big Grin](https://www.rx7club.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
If you are worried about using 12v on the signal wire, get a couple 1kOhm resistors. Connect one end of one resistor to 12v, the end of the other resistor to ground, then connect the remaining 2 ends together. Touch the signal wire to where the two resistors meet. This will cut the voltage from 12v down to about 6v.
If you have any questions, let me know. I can draw something up to make t more clear.

Glad you responded to this one Kent.
Since I picked up my 2nd gen coil I really wanted to know if it was any good so that when I build the box (TT) if I have problems at least I know where and where not to look.
