2GCDFIS write-up w/ pics
I finished my 2nd Gen Coil Direct Fire Ignition mod the other day and took pictures as I went. Now I posted a write-up with pictures on my site. Check it out here If you have any advice to add or anything I should change let me know, as this is just what I did, probably not the best way to go.

good read. i've been planning on doing this for awhile now to cut down on the backfiring as to save my mufflers from burning out. also the power gain sounds worthwhile!
how much did you get the 2nd gen coil for?

Awesome now if I could just get a simple transitor trick write up with out needing to read over 300 posts to figure it out. I like just plain and simple right there in front of me. Nice right up by the way!!

Nice write-up. Agreed, the TT thread has gotten much larger than I ever had imagined. I will do my best to write it up, but it is hard because I don't have my car, circuits, or anything related to it here. The basic circuit isn't bad to build yourself. Once we get the boards made, it will be easy for everyone. You don't have to worry about how it works, only that it does.

Well I was following it, and I understand how it works. But I was away and it moved light years ahead and im just to lazy to catch up. But yea addict if you get a chance to do that it would be super sweet.

i did the 2GCDFIS modification to my 83' rx7 12a, also the week before i had just put a straight pipe on it. i had the 2nd gen coil already, used some wire from a stereo harness, no connectors just stripped the wires then wrapped them and covered with electrical tape. I placed my coil back between the clutch master cylinder and the fender/apron, it fit tight when it's just placed there. i used the leading wires off of my turbo II since it's engine is blown and the 1st gen wires didn't fit down all the way. btw the fc wires are way longer.
my car has better mpg and a lot more power , and less backfiring. my gas mileage increase was also with an increase in the agressiveness in my driving style lately. good write-up

Good points. The transistor trick thread is too long and complicated to even bother reading on dialup. This writeup is great. The one thing I'd love to see, is two separate wiring diagrams that are before and after, side by side.
I also wonder for a car that already starts good, idles smooth, gets fair mileage if you don't beat on it, where is the real gain of this mod? There's no horsepower increase I know of....

my 83' had new distributor cap, rotor button, ngk wires, ngk plugs all new with in like 2,000 miles and it started well got gas mileage pretty much the same as the original window sticker and had it's horsepower. after the 2GCDFIS mod i did notice an increase in power, and better starting so it can still get better even if it's already good. who told you it wouldn't add power? i can feel it.

no really, its easy...
Before I installed mine I gathered a few good pictures from the massive post and printed them out to refer to when installing. The hardest part of the job (took most time) was removing the AC so I could fit the FC coil in there! I 've aleady seen 3 mpg millage improvement and it sure feels more powerful. My car wasnt and isnt in new running condition but I'd rate this mod up close to my RB full exhaust in performance increase. If you have one of these things, what re you waiting for?!!
Props to vipernicus, latin_heat, kentsu for the install tips/pics from the original thread. And of course gsl-se addict for the TT!!
Half FB:
One wire goes from Trailing Coil to "L" on the distribtor
One wire goes from L1 on the distributor to the Trailing plug of Rotor1
One wire goes from L2 on the distributor to the Trailing plug of Rotor2
Half FC:
One wire goes from L1 on the FC coil to the Leading plug of Rotor1
One wire goes from L2 on the FC coil to the Leading plug of Rotor2
short red wire - 12v
short black wire - GND
blue wire - output to coil (connects to red wire on 2nd gen coil)
long red wire - B terminal for J-109 (lower (vertical) terminal)
yellow wire - C terminal for J-109 (upper (horizontal) terminal)
When you connect it up and power it, the green LED should be on and the red LED off. They alternate flashing.

Oh and a few other tips:
Dont cut your leading stock ignitor --> coil wire. Just tuck it up out of the way in case you ever want to/need to switch it back to first gen coil (if FC coilpack died on you)
2nd gen plugs for leading ignition = BR8EIX Iridium
And you will retard your timing slightly (5 deg) so you will have to readjust it a bit

BUT! I dunno about 2GDFIS-TT
The MSD coils are probably superior to the 2g coil, but if you're triggering those from J-109's you're missing out big-time.
You want to get an MSD box to really make those babies work!

Thanks for the install intructions, ratboy. I think these guys also want assembly instructions. I will put together a write-up with some basic drawings this weekend. teejs has agreed to build one and show pics of the assembly process. Then we can put the write-up in html format and maybe smnc can host it. I think everyone on here could build the simplified circuit without much issue. That will get you guys by until we get the professional circuits boards built for the auto-switching unit. I will put the write-up in a new thread so people can find it easily.
I have never tried the regular 2GCDFIS, but I know people have reported noticable gains over it with the TT. speckamp was looking to replace his MSD with the TT. Not sure if he posted the comparision, though.
