20b in 1st gen

Just wondering if anyone has ever swapped a 20b into a 1st gen seven. If someone has done this succesfully then i might give it a go this summer.

Yeah, it's been done but it will require large amounts of money or the ability to fabricate parts yourself. Even then it will cost a bit to do it properly. Search...

I thought long an hard about doing something similar, and eventually I decided against it in favour of a 13B-T conversion instead. Although I like the idea of 500RWHP and enough torque to pull a battleship, the real problem is getting it to the ground. Unless you're tubbing with some serious rubber at the rear (and a coupla bags of cement in the boot) it's kind of pointless. Sure, it's a powerful beast, but if you can't tame it you'll just look like a jerk at the lights when you floor it and go sideways into a pole.

Having said that, it'd still be interesting to see

I agree with Jon_Valjean.

I would like to add About 300 RWHP is perfect for a 1st gen - on the street. I run that (315rwhp) at low boost @ ~12 PSI on the street. At that boost I have beat plenty of unsuspecting powerful V8 and turbo cars already. It's all about power to weight.

At 12 psi, the car is fun to drive, yet not out of control. Plus the engine isn't even working hard. I have plenty left If I need more.

At Higher boost, the "O $hit" factor kicks in a little more,
and should be enough to put other big-boys (Porsche's, Vipers, Z06's) in their place.

What would you expect in terms of fuel consumption, if you had a 20b?

I work for an ISP in New Zealand which was sold a few years back for $25m. The three owners all went out and bought brand new Lamborghini's and Ferarri's. One of them (with about 10 miles on the clock) decided to show off to the staff members outside work. In the wet. With traction turned off. You got it - sideways into a pole with everyone watching...

All the carbon fibre was cracked and shattered, bent wheel, damaged suspension. Needed a lot of work. I think he just sold it as is and bought another one.

That's why they say that remote starts are only for automatic cars. That's pretty funny though!

We're thinking of a 20B for the fb. that or a TII swap. If it is going to be the 20B, we'd like the NA street ported flava with a side of TII tranny/rear/wide body kit.

But instead of asking random people on a forum like this, I'm gonna call Tito at Alamo Rotary in San Antonio, since he did my friend's 20B fd conversion.

I guess I'm just pessamistic, but:

a) I don't like wide-body conversions. They look like different cars - ok for the track, for a street application they look odd. Looks like you're trying too hard, and really it's not necessary. This is personal opinion of course, but I don't like them.

b) Torque is the defining problem here. If you use a 13B-T solution the torque starts to kick in when you've already got traction, when the car is already at 3500rpm and you've got a good, stable line ahead. A 20B will produce prodigious amounts of torque from a low revolutionary speed, and will be hard to control no matter the port size or induction used.

c) I would bet money that a 13B-T would be more controllable and more applicable than a 20B (n/a or turbocharged) for the FB RX7. It's a matter of weight vs. torque vs. weight vs. earplugs. As Directfreak has already said, 300-350Hp in an FB is FUN. 350+ is over the top. How much do you really need?

But instead of asking random people on a forum like this, I'm gonna call Tito at Alamo Rotary in San Antonio, since he did my friend's 20B fd conversion.
Yeah, it's a much better idea to talk to a garage who wants your money, than the 10,000+ members who frequent these forums and have real world experience with the FB RX7.

Just consider what you want from the car, that's all I ask. Your requests might be just a little unreasonable for a chassis that is pushing 25 years old.

Heh, just do the RE swap, It'll be more than enough for your needs. Btw, nice fb, got any more pics?
