2 problems, one major other not

my first problem is i have a very sticky throttle. ive had it taken in and looked at by 3 different places, and they cant find out whats wrong. its and automatic 1984 gs model, with the 1.1 liter carbed 12a. every time i stomp the gas to show up a civic or a celica, i feel the pull of the car till it hits 4.5 thos. rpms then it pulls twice as hard and stretches my rpms out to the max (my horn goes off). then i let off the gas all the way and its still rising. the only thing i can do is stomp the brake and hope it stops. ive had to pull over and pop the hood well over 30 times now. so if anybody can help me out on this please tell. the second thing is ive been looking for a short ram air intake for my baby but, i cant find one. so what ive done was i bought a preformance coned air filter and took off my plastic intake tube and stuck the filter right on the end of the stock air filter housing. but id really like some help makin a better one. i live in va so i do have emmisions still. soo in not sure what i can do. also the plastic flap inside the stock air filter housing would it do anything if i took that off or what? please help me out

Well, for you cai you can do this... http://www.mazspeed.com/coldairintake.htm
I have done it and it seems to me like it works fairly well. When I cut the hole, I made it in the side of the radiator housing instead of the smaller existing one.

Your engine coming more alive at about 4.5K rpm is just your secondaries kicking in, in your carburator. That is normal to feel a difference when they're off and on.

Also that buzzing sound it not your Horn, all mazda rx-7 came with a rev buzzer and comes on close to 6.5-7k rpm. Because rotary have the tendency to be rev happy, they made that as a warning for you to ease off your throttle or your engine can go bad.

As for the sticking that is unusual in the sense that it still revs higher when you release off the pedal. Make sure that your return spring is still hooked on and not broken. Try to lube up the accelerator cable. Also spraying that whole assembly with wd-40 or carb cleaner.

As for cold air intakes, if you want something that is trully functional something like in the above link will be best. But no one makes anything like that for our cars. Buying the racing beat 360 intake is the next best option.

I think the problem are these two parts

... it's an automatic...

... when I stomp the pedal...

Your pedal is hooked to a wire which is hooked to a small metal linkage. When you SLAM your heavy foot down on that pedal, that poor little metal linkage gets bent out of shape like the way a whisk would if you used it as a hammer.

The damage is probably already done, but a few things you can check:
- Remove the mats. They may be catching under you gas pedal. It happens
- Remove the air cleaner and have a friend *softly* and *slowly* press the pedal down while you look down the primary barrels. When the butterflies are straight up and down, say "stop" then ask him if he's got pedal left. If he does, then you're doing major damage to your carb whenever you push past the point that he has hit.
- If you find the carb linkage is warped/bent, you're pretty much SOL without a spare donor carb and/or a rebuild. even with the rebuild it would be tough to straighten the linkage.

Also check to see if anything is binding under the linkage. If your hot start assist has been removed, the spot where that attaches on the linkage can hang down and bind.

What are you like 12? Treat your car with some respect, and use some fineness on the pedal. Don't just stomp it and abuse your car because some civic ricer wants to race.

Oh, and to add to Sam (dj55b's) post....

When you oil up the linkage and spring area, don't use WD40 or carb cleaner, or if you do, use another oil afterwards.

WD40 and carb cleaner are penetrating oils and while they're great for cutting through the years of grime and clearing things out, they suck at lubricating. So if you use WD40, turn around and spray it with some white grease or 3-in-1 oil or something after to give it an actual *oiling* after your penetrating oil has done it's handywork.

Throttle return springs, definitely check those as Sam said.

Jon

Edit: nice name... I thought I was the only guy who preferred a-cups to DD-cups, lol
