Cosmicbang:- I actually said clone of the mechanism not of the soft top. I agree a clone of the soft top would mean the size and shape would be identical.
I also agree you only get what you pay for. The cloth used for my quote was identical to the Mercedes with a glued liner fabric, I believe BMW also uses the same style cloth. You can get lower quotes if you are happy with cloth more suited to a cheap boat cover and accept minimum stitching. The sun plays havoc with some of the cheaper cloths which shrink and cause the stitching to break.

ok, heres what i got right now. the images make it look like the back suspension is all jacked up, but what you cant see in the picture is that one side is parked on a hole. hehehe.
the trunk/hatch area is currently covered with a couple of scrap sheets i welded together just to have something covering the area. i intend to put in a swinging trunk lid. the b-pillar area is going to get a lower sheet under it with rolled bits to cover the front and back gaps so it doesnt look like a$$ anymore. hehe. i have a marine vinyl top i made with clear vinyl shower curtain material sewn in to provide windows. held down with some strips of sheet metal that have carrige bolts welded to them and are sewn into the vinyl of the top. wingnuts underneath hold the top on so the assembly can be removed easily. it worked well enough to keep the snow and rain out while driving from south carolina to kansas a couple of months ago. the secondary supports on the windshield are made from the back edge of the window frame. the curve matched the body perfectly already so when i cut them off the door i just moved them to the front. there is no glass in the doors, which are welded shut themselves. i started to remove the door handles and fill in the holes as you can see. this car is a work in progress, so please dont complain about the crappy half-assed job im doing. hehehe. learning experience and all that.
