1st Gen trivia

Ok, I'll throw up the first volley....

Easy one---- What year did they go to the 16 gallon gas tank? (Hint- When they went to the donut spare tire)

Easy one -- Whats the difference in wheel bolt pattern in the GSL-SE and non- GSL-SE? (If you can't answer this one, you should be forced to drive a Yugo for a month.)

Another -- What year did they add Lumbar adjustments to the drivers seat?

Not so easy one --- What year did they get rid of the key'd gas cap door?

Very not so easy one -- What's the physical difference between the Cruise Control Actuator on a GSL-SE and a none GSL-SE?

Multiple choice -- What are the locations they put the stock radio amps in the various years?

Cross training -- Staying stock, what parts can be interchanged between the 1st Gen and 2nd Gen.

Example - Rear brake pads on GSL-SE and any 2nd Gen with vented rear brakes.

Feel free to answer and/or add to this string. I know the answers to at least these. All wrong answers are subject to mild ridicule. Spelling is NOT graded. This should be fun.

Also, if someone could link this to the 2nd Gen page, would make it even more fun.

-'81
-4x4 1/2 vs 4 x 110
-'83 ( I think)
-'83 ( I think again)
-Cable to trottle is longer on the SE.
-Under passenger seat until '84 where it was moved to inside the rear storage bin cavity.
-Already gave my example

What year and model has vented rear brake rotors?

i think they got rid of the keyed gas cap in 81, when they went to the second series. that is also, again i think, when they went to the larger gas tank..
and as for the lumbar support, the 79 that i just bought has it. however i donot know if those seats were stock or not (and donot care since i ripped them out).

when did they go to the lsd?

where are all of the vin's located? and i mean all.. (this is more for my personal legal dilema)?

'81. (I suffer with the 13-gallon tank and the original Brudgestone SD106 spare, mounted on a never-used wafflewheel!)

Easy one -- Whats the difference in wheel bolt pattern in the GSL-SE and non- GSL-SE? (If you can't answer this one, you should be forced to drive a Yugo for a month.)

Us 12A folks have 4x110 which is stupid-hard to find, while GSL-SE types get away with 4x114.3, aka 4 on 4.5". Just like Ford compacts have used for years and years and years.

Another -- What year did they add Lumbar adjustments to the drivers seat?

I THINK it was '83, but the '80 Leather Sport model may have had it. I found a guy with an IMMACULATE LS locally, maybe I'll go scope his car out?

Not so easy one --- What year did they get rid of the key'd gas cap door?

'81?

Very not so easy one -- What's the physical difference between the Cruise Control Actuator on a GSL-SE and a none GSL-SE?

They made RX-7s with cruise control?

Multiple choice -- What are the locations they put the stock radio amps in the various years?
In dash, under pass seat, under the rear bins, but they all end up in the Dumpster. (I THINK some of them were under the pass. seat - I know for sure that mine is in the dash)

Cross training -- Staying stock, what parts can be interchanged between the 1st Gen and 2nd Gen.

Many brake parts between GSL-SE and 2nd-gen base, um... ah... allegedly the 2nd-gen seats bolt right up to 1st-gen rails, uh... the oil filters interchange (good info when scrounging for oil filters in the boneyard eh? ) hmm. Clutch is interchangeable all N/A from '83 onward (although I think the '89-91 is stronger?), and I think starter too, and some engine parts also interchange. Really i don't know because FCs are big, heavy, cramped, and only good for engine swaps.

I have a good one - what exactly is the function of the shutter valve? (Meaning, not only what does it do but why does it do it?)

Well, they never "went" to it because you could get an '85 with an open diff, but they were optional starting in '81 with the GSL.

VINs can be seen on the doorjamb sticker, the dash plate, on the firewall roughly above the air cleaner is on a 12A, and I don't think I've seen the VIN anywhere else on the car - it might also be on the underhood plate but it's been a while since I've looked.

The shutter valve shuts off the rear primary runner of the intake. reason? to cut down on backfiring. Also Mazda thought it would be funny to make a engine component sound like a damn goose on crack when it goes bad. Mine drove me up the wall untill I found out what the hell it was. Pitched it in the woods!
