1st gen tips?
Alrighty then, I gave into the madness and bought a 1985 GSL rx7. Now I want it to go faster, understand? The first thing I want to do is start working on the engine. I Plan on taking it out of the car to repaint everything while Install a new intake and exhaust header. I will be repainting transmission as well, and anything else I can find with rust on it. At this time i also wanted to install a flywheel, underdrive pulleys, and re-wire the engine compartment. (damn mice) I want to just do bolt on goddies for now until i blow it, then i want to rebuild it as a bridgeport.(Its not a daily driver...its a weekend car that will attend burnout contests at dragstips; however This is a long while away, so I dont want to focus on that.

Im also going to be doing ignition mods, electric fan...ram air...etc, any tips on which parts/combos are best?
P.S. DONT TELL ME TO SWAP IN A 13B! I dont want one...besides, at this time im not shooting for horsepower any higher than 150. (flywheel)
Any help would be appreciated.

Don't have a 12A so I can't attest to anything firsthand, but if you haven't looked at it yet:

As Kenetsu said free flowing exhaust such as RB and a sterling carb or other aftermarket carb (but Sterling ftw) and you should be good.
Sterling recommends using a upgrade fuel pump an regulator to provide enough fuel

Weber 48 IDA/manifold (will also be usable when bridgeported, just change chokes and jets.)
Full Exhaust - THe RB Streetport setup will work best for now and later when bridged, you can get the rear piping increased to 3"...no problem for max power.
2nd Gen Direct Fire Mod w/ MSD 6A or 6AL
4.33 Gears will be great for weekend, burnout, drag.
A custom sprung or unsprung pucked clutch (4 or 6 puck), especially when bridged.
...and yes, this is for a 12A motor, not a 13B, as I run almost everything on the list but the gears and pucker.

Classy Ray, very classy.
Ram Air- probably not a great idea. A cold air intake would possibly do some good, but most ram air setups just cause more turbulence than anything else.

Do all of you even think he needs a carb?!
Stock is 100 HP... Exhaust with header and no cats should get you 20-30, right? Ignition, cleaneed up grounds, an electric fan, and proper tuning should get just shy of 150.
Maybe do a little weight distribution and reduction... Get a Honda Civic battery (Smaller) and put it in the passenger storage bin... Ditch the seats in lieu of an FIA fiberglass one piece... A/C and interior delete... And some Diamonds or Panasports...

Reading his post again, I see that he specified 150 hp at the flywheel. In that case, I suppose a carb would put him quite a bit past his target...

My first tip would be to go over the brakes, suspension and steering components with a fine tooth comb. Going fast is easy. Controlling it, not as easy. You'll get more enjoyment out of flinging the car around corners 15MPH faster than everyone else than you will just going fast in a straight line. After that follow Kentetsu's advice. He's got an awesome little auto-Xer, so he knows what hes talking about.
Another tip, any work your doing on the car, take the length of time you expect it to take, and triple it. That will give you a more realistic timeframe.

On a totally different note, I thought you might want to know that the strategy of blowing up your engine first then rebuilding it probably will not work for you. I have blown up a good number of 12 A engines. Unfortunately, there is not enough left of them after to rebuild, so I have needed to get a new core each time. By now I could take the bits from 3 and build one, but you will only have one. Rebuild before you blow, I would say.

if you start pulling 8k alot you will end up with the rotor bearing welding to the eshaft which will screw both shaft and rotor maybe evan cause step ware on the plates.

Okay, I cant believe I got this many responses in a few days. WOW. But I have been reading and as for tuning suspension first, it has racing beat springs and tockicko "blues" as well as poly bushings according to its previous owner.
This weekend I went zoom-zooming with my rx7 with a full tank of 93 octane gas ($41.38!!!!! ) And im quite surprised how strong its "weak" 100 horsepower actually is. It runs very strong....ESPECIALLY ABOVE 5000 RPM, and I love the sound of it. I have even irrationally given my car a name. I also found myself petting the dash a few times.....
Okay, in all seriousness, i believe the 150 hp is going to be plenty.
