1st gen seat options.
Say you had a 85 GSL with Maroon interior. The driver and passenger side seats are pretty worn. What would you do?
Would you just throw a cover on them? (if so what kind)
Would you take the car to an interior place and get them re-shod in leather?
Would you take out both seats and replace them with something totally different?
I'm just looking for some options.
If you opt to replace the seats as a whole, what kind would you use. Don't the 2nd gen seats bolt right up? How are they in comparison to the 1st gen seats?

I put black leather seats into my 1980 from an 88.... The seats look beautiful.... There's 4 bolts that hold each seat... The 4 on the passenger fit exactly,,, 3 of the 4 on the driver's seat fit exactly... The fact that 1 of the holes doesn't line up isn't a big deal,, the other 3 do the job just fine.... I bought the seats off a kid who was parting out one of his rx7's,,, both seats for $50.... The passenger one went right in (it has some wear, but no rips or major wear),,, but the driver's seat needed to be fixed... I got the main parts changed,, not the whole thing,, for $150,,, it looks like new....
I heard supra seats (i don't know what year) fit a first gen,,, maybe some else on the forum knows of this... If you do decide to reupholster (spelling) the whole seat in leather,, have some intermeshing of colors,,, it will make it look custom rather than having the seat look stock if you choose one color... My friend has his entire interior burgandy and grey just by changing the parts of his burgandy interior with other grey stock parts,,, really neat effect... When he reupholsters his seats,,, he will intermesh the grey and burgandy leathers on the different parts of the seat....
p.s. i hate seat covers...

What ammount of "little work" are you talking about here? Something that someone who doesnt have a welder could do?
Someone who has basic woodshop tools could do?
I have a crimson and black two tone thing goin on in my car, looks realllll classy so far.

I was gonna put some 3rd gen seats in mine eventually, even though my interior is almost mint. I just like them cause they are comfortable (never sat in a 2nd gen). I also thought about black Sparcos. They have a seat that looks fairly decent and not too hardcore racer if you know what I mean. They run about $270 each though, and another $180 each for the mounting bracket set thingy...

look...........
I have an 85 GSL-Se....
I wanted to stay stock.....but I didnt like the leather seat
I did not fit in it right.....so I took it to Canoga auto.....
A local interior repair shop........They redid the seat panels that were torn up....just where I touched the seat, the rest was in good shape and was not redone.
I also had them redesign the headrest to come out farther...I have a bad back and wanted to contour my body into the seat.......they also took out some section's in the middle as well
The result is perfect color match and I sit perfect and tight.... and it is still stock.....

the third gen rails are longer and closer together than ours, so this is what needs to be componsated for.. you will have to use the first gen rails and make them fit. take a piece of metal (i used some welding metal that was about one inch wide and 1/8 inch thick) and make extensions for the rails so that they are long enough. you are looking at about a three inch piece with a hole on each end, so that it is bolted to both the rail and the bottom of the seat.
once you have the rails mounted then you want to bolt one side down to the floor ( door side seems to work the best). to mount the second rail to the floor, you are going to make a cross member to widen it. same idea as before, you want a piece that is long enough to go from the rail to where the rail mounts up.
if i can get a hold of a digi cam, i will take some pictures..

I am installing covers from leatherseats.com. They match the 84/85 leather. They cost 500 a pair and are not for knuckle-dragging greasy types. This is a job for guys who can do a nice job by taking their time, being clean and not muscling and breaking stuff. And its hard on your hands when you stretch on the new covers. The reason I went this way is so I could add a seat heater too. Seattle shops are a rip. 1500 for both seats in leather! No way.

there's a set of leather seats for sale on ebay. They're maroon and reupholstered and look pretty good. I already bought the door panels off this guy and he seems easy to deal with.

I used to have 2ed gen seats installed,,those seem
taller at the seat with a larger bolster then any 1st gens
then i scored some -SE seats and door panels the -SE
was blue and the seats and panels are gray.My cars
interior is all black, but now, the gray breaks up all that
black. The -SE drivers seat has tilt, and the adjustable
lumbar suport and headrests. The door panels (-SE)
had electric windows. I popped holes for the window cranks, and custom fabbed the cranks to fit..turned out
real well,,,clean I also installed a 2ed gen steering
wheel from a 87 -SE , fat leather,3 spoke, black.
