1st gen gauge cluster swap 79-80?
aright as you know the 80 speedo only gos to 85 mph thanks to the government, the 79 went to 130. Can I simply just swap the gauge clusters and will they work properly?

I have an '80 with a 120MPH speedo. Either the change to 85MPH was made mid-year, or a previous owner converted it to the '79 (it's green, so it's not the '83 cluster--has the quartz clock and volt/RPM meter).

79-80 cluster swap
Direct swap, no problem-
-remove the cover around the signal switshes (hint, the headlight switch end just pulls off the shaft)
-disconnect battery
-shorty phillips to remove 2 screws up under hood over instruments
-this plastic trim that surrounds the perimeter of the instrument cluster is then still held on by 2 spring clips on the lower corners of the surround
-after its out, 2 more screws under the "hood" above and in front of the instruments
-2 more screws at the back, facing DOWN. you will need to lay on your back (easy if seat is out - 4 bolts - save your back They are a ways up in the dash so you will need a Lo-o-ong phillips to get at them (10"?)
-thats all the retaining hardware now:
Speedo:
-the cable has a release tab on the end going into the back of the cluster. now that the screws are all out you might be able to push the cluster forward out of the dash enough to reach in and squeeze the tab as you pull the cable away. Re-install you just need to pop it in straight.
Finally, pull the circular wire harness connector off the rear
that's it.
Enjoy thinking your Rx might actually go 120mph
