1985 Gsl Se
Hey...just got my first car and first RX 7. 1985 GSL SE bought it on tuesday and took it for a spin today. Had to drive it, no plates, no insurance . Its got 32,000 on street port rebuild, 299,000 on body "i know its a lot but its got almost no rust". RB Header, rebuilt tranny at 285,000 , OEM Clutch at the same time, new front brake rotors. Rear diff needs a rebuild. $1600 Canadian.. Thanks a lot for the great car "serupklekker"..Here are some pics..

Tell me what you guys think and if their is anything i need to watchout for..
I have had a couple ruff estimates but has anyone gotten their diff re built and for how much?
Thinking buying a RB muffler to go with the header....
In the future possibly turbo..and rims but i may just leave the ones on it but any suggestions for rims?
Thanks a lot guys..

Mazdatrix had a rear chunk for sale a little while ago that was a left over for about $400.00 I believe. It would be easier and cheaper to buy a used chunk if that one is gone. Also, it was new.

1-Don't let it overheat! For prevention you might want to change the top radiator hose, thermostat and rad cap right now. They're cheap and easy. Don't run without a t'stat: it will increase engine wear. Once in a while, when you come out to start the car in the morning and it's cooled off, pop the hood and undo the rad cap: you should get an audible "pffft" indicating that the cooling system is tight. If not, reduce the cooldown time until it's about two hours and the engine is still a little warm. If you can't get that "pffft" start looking for a water leak or an air leak (which would be rad cap or radiator). There's a whole lot of info available here on this forum regarding cooling problems!
2-add a little 2-cycle oil to each tankful: about 6-8 oz. will do. Lacking 2-cycle oil, add Marvel Mystery oil. The rotary has some of the same lube problems as a 2-cycle engine, and the pre-mix solves them. Makes it run much smoother, too.

Some owners in cold climates report starting problems. You may want to replace the old aluminum battery cables with copper for the winter. Also, some are using Optima batteries.

Cold weather is not a problem as he is only about 40 or 50 miles from the ocean and we have a mild winter on the coast of British Columbia. Further inland it gets much colder. Where this car is it only gets down to about 14F or -10C at the coldest.
I also have a 1985 GSL-SE that I've owned a little over 8 years. It has 199,400 kms (123,900 miles) on it and runs like a champ. I have some rust around the rear wheel wells, but not too bad, and other than that its very clean.
If you ever need maintenance done, come to SNKs Race-It in Steveston. Shane is an expert on RX7s and races them at Mission Raceway.

ya thx...ya car has been good so far...i wanna get everything good then start with upgrades. The car seems to run good so Im going to get it fixed and then maybe get rid of the bubble on it and then start with upgrades for the 13B. Im just not sure where to start. What do you guys think? Im thinking get rid of the crappy muffler on it, get a hi flow cat and Rb muffler to go with the RB header. Then im not sure what to do after that. I wanna do something simple that I can easily do myself that has a little gain but not huge. I would also not like to sacrifise fuel mpg. Any ideas?
