1985 13B starter question.
Dear 1st GXers,
Where in the heck is the starter located on a 13B? and is it the same starter as the starter for the 12A? The local Pep Boys has a starter for an 84 but I have an 85 with the 13B engine. Any help would be appreciated, I have stood looking under the hood several times looking like a dope and still can't find anything that remotely resembles a starter. Again, thanks for helping with my embarrassing stupidity.

All 1st gen starters are the same except for the auto transmission which has different number of pinion teeth and will not fit.
If that starter is rebuilt make sure they test it there in the store. Over the years I've had about 3 rebuilt starters for various cars fail weeks or months after installation.
Replacement is easy on a lift or up on jackstands. Undo negative lead to battery (under the hood) first. Undo top starter bolt with ratchet and extension, and leave bolt hanging in flange through-hole for easier installation later. The rest is obvious. Should be done in an hour. If this is your first, take a bunch of pix with your digital camera in case you have questions later about re-attaching wiring, etc.

the starter isn't under the hood. what ur looking at is called the engine. u have to look under the car to see the starter. not sure about 2nd or 3rd gen, but all the 1st gen starters r the same, cept for autos. i've used 1st gen starter on a 74 tranny. also, there's 2 bolts that mount the starter to the tranny. the lower one u get to from under the car, the other is done from under the hood and goes thru the rear housing, and it's really long(at least that's what she said).
