1984 GSL Clarion Stereo Question
Hi Everyone! I have a question concerning my stock Clarion stereo. After only being able to hear my stereo thru 2 of the 4 speakers. Front right and back right, I took it to a car stereo shop. They suggested it was probably the radio itself that was malfunctioning. I swapped a few speakers around to discount them as suspect. Music is heard only in the right side of the vehicle. Anyways, they suggested upgrading to a"2004" stereo unit but I prefer all original parts when I can get them.
I have a replacement 84/GSL Clarion unit coming and my question is HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO REPLACE THESE STOCK UNITS? Can anyone give me some detail as to the steps involved? The face plate of the replacement Clarion is a little beat, so I WOULD LIKE TO SWAP MY FACE PLATE ONTO THE REPLACEMENT UNIT.
How difficult is swapping out a face plate?
Any and all suggestions much appreciated,
David

Do You Remember How You Did It?
That's interesting... one comment says it can't be done but you've actually changed face plates before?
Can you remember any details?
How is the face plate attached?
Also, curious as to how you removed the large plastic molded piece that surrounds the entire area from the top of the dash to the bottom of the ash tray?
Thank you,
David

What's really interesting is that I'm sitting on a complete '84 Deluxe Clarion RX-7 headunit with the EQ and tape deck out of the car and have no idea what the heck these guys are talking about...

You have to remove the shifter bezel/boot assembly, or at least loosen it to remove the stereo surround. The bottom of the surround has 2 screws in it, on top it has a friction fit type retainer on each side to hold it tight, it just pops in or out. Don't pull from the top, remove the shift bezel and unscrew the bottom first or you will break it guarenteed.

Thank Guys for that important info. I know about the shifter, boot area bezel but what about the huge bezel that is basically the entire console that surrounds everything? How is that removed with out splitting the plastic?

Right, remove the nuts behind the switches, loosen the shifter bezel, unscrew the 2 screws on the bottom of the big stereo surround piece, then simply pull it straight off, there aren't any screws on the top of it (the big piece you want to remove) to worry about.

I'm pretty sure there are.
Tell you what. Since I'm bored, and since it needs to be done anyway, I'll go out there and do it myself. Then, I'll take STEP BY STEP pictures.
Then, maybe the topic shall be put into the FAQ!
Or at least the archives, lol

correct
mills is right, 2 screws after removing the shifter bezel, and 2 nuts under the *****. (that part is easy 2 remember, getit, the nuts under the *****, lol). Then there is a friction fit at the very top where the vents are. Just pull carefully.
