1980 12A wont run

bought a 12A with 80k orig miles. dumps mad fuel, has spark but still wont run. got it started up to 1200 rpm then it dies, wont hold idle. push started and ran til 1200 then died. any suggestions of what to check, could the carb be that bad? any help is apprec.
