1979 Rx7 AC

ok, so my cars ac compressor seems to be working... clutch and all... the clutch kicks on when i push the ac button on the fan ****. The fan blows, the air is even cooler than the air outside the car, for as long as i run the ac, but its really more like just a really good fan because the air is never hot. Im believing the car is low on freon. I also recall being told that the new freon (r134a) yes, the stuff that walmart sells wont work on cars with the old freon unelss you flush the system, yada yada yada. They said the fittings are different and such as well. Well here is what I found....

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...rtId=prod63262

would this be everything i need to convert over to the new freon? If so, it would be well worth it in my eyes to have a 1979 rx7, which will be brand new painted and all here shorty, and have a working a/c along with nice interior and all.... i would feel quite proud to be driving my little ol rx7 :-) let me know if the kit is what i need. thanks so much. K.C.

I have never converted mine (it's still running R12) theough it is in need of a recharge. After sitting for several eyars, it's not very cold.

My understanding is that 1) the fittings are different and need ot be converted , 2) the system needs to be completely evacuated (which you can't legally do at home, and 3) the lubricant is not compatible. I heard a rumor once that some of the seals might not stand up to conversion, but I don't know how true that is.

Here is one thread on the subject. The rest can be found by using the search term, R134a.

Well i have read up on it a little more... no so much on here as on general auto a/c sites anyhow apparently along with the retrofit kit and flushing the system, i should replace my condenser to a newer aftermarket style (if i can find one) and obviously as always, i should change the drier. Which is getting a little more deep than I really wanted to, considering i have a working system... the problem is, that r12 is next to gone, are there shops that still charge r12 systems?? it would be worth paying to get it charged to not have to tear the entire system apart.... anyhow thanks. K.C.

well i found a few interesting things out in just a few minutes... :-) I can just change my drier. Pull a new vacuum on my system (which i should be able to do at my shop i work at) and then put freeze 12 in the system..... its the closest thing around to r12 according to what i have read and will do the trick.... anywho... i just hope my condesor holds a vacuum, **** i may replace it just for the fun of it, if i have learned anything with this car, its do it the best way first, instead of cheaping out, because if you cheap out, it will cost more, and youll hve to do it twice.... that should be guidance to all of us on every aspect of these cars!

P.S. I have realized i like my rx7 so much cuz its the only project ill ever find that is truly impossible to finish!!

Man Glen, I wished I knew you needed a little R-12. I have 9 cans of R-12 and could have brought a little out when I was in Cali!

Oh, well... you can just come back!

(I don't have a working recharge manifold anymore, anyway.)
